Interview with Angelo Montilla, InDesign Trainer
Q+A with InDesign expert Angelo Montilla

Angelo Montilla is an Adobe Certified Professional visual designer, instructor and content creator.
Based in Windsor, Ontario, Angelo has more than 15 years experience in graphic design – specializing in print, interactive design, and digital publishing.
In 2018 Angelo launched Montilla Design where he regularly provides high-quality, free how-to Adobe design tutorials with more than 1.5-million views on YouTube.
Angelo has also appeared on Adobe Live and was proudly an Adobe MAX 2021 speaker.
Angelo spoke at our online event earlier this year, The Design + Marketing Summit. So we caught up with him and asked him a few questions of our own.
Q: Favorite tool or resource you’d hate working without?
Being so involved with teaching digital publishing techniques, I would hate living without the interactive tools in InDesign. With the combination of Object States, Buttons and Forms, and Animation, you can create some real stunning interactive experiences that can be published online or shared as an ePub.
I don’t want to imagine what life would be like without these tools!
Q: Obscure Tip or Trick you use all the time?
I don’t know if it is so much obscure, but one of my favourite tricks is setting up static captions to images in a layout using the Description field in the Metadata. Once the caption is added to an image’s description, using either Photoshop or Adobe Bridge, you can use the Links panel in an InDesign project to select multiple images (regardless of where they’re placed) by right-clicking and choosing Captions > Generate Static Captions.
Then, watch the magic happen as every caption will be applied throughout the entire document to the images selected in the Links panel. It really is a great tip for those bigger documents with multiple images. A true time saver!
Q: What do you enjoy sharing in your sessions?
I am excited to show attendees how to use the Object Layer Options to create simple social media graphics using layered Photoshop files in InDesign.
Also, being efficient and saving time is important when creating social media assets in InDesign. I can’t wait to show attendees how to set up different page preset sizes, how to work with Alternate Layouts and exporting multiple social media sizes that will be ready to share on your favourite platforms!
Q: How did you first get into this industry, professionally?
My design career started as a page layout designer at the Windsor Star – the daily newspaper here in my home city. This is where I discovered my true passion for design. From there I moved to teaching visual design at the School of Media, Art and Design at the community college in Windsor. That is where I found my passion for teaching and sharing my knowledge with others.
