My client brought me a 1200 page book for further editing and additions. Much of the book is scanned images of old books, and the print file is 112MB. Now I need to create a copy for online viewing. I tried exporting it as interactive, playing around with the compressions settings but the file either becomes too large, or the scanned images are illegible. My client has a previous “lite” copy of this book that’s 16.4MB, and the scanned pages look fine! How can I create it?

Ask your client who produced the previous version and how it was done.
Check the images are grayscale and saved with maximum compression.

      Thanks for responding.
I did ask the client, but I was hoping to figure it out on my own!

When you have the answer, share it with all the class!

It’s usually an image compression or resolution issue… I usually use 150 ppi and Medium compression.
But sometimes it’s other stuff hidden in the PDF. See:

Wow! David, thanks so much for the info. Whether or not it’ll work for me, the link you sent is chock full of awesome info I never knew! I’ll let you all know if I manage to generate a small file.
