This Week in InDesign Articles, Number 128
Hey, did you see our new 3-minute PePcon video yet? If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like going to a PePcon, this should give you a good idea. And, once you finish that, take a moment to peruse this list of terrific articles and videos I’ve compiled!
- InCopy users take note: Chad Chelius has posted a great piece on InCopySecrets about using InCopy with remote users.
- Jeff Witchel is back with a video that explains InDesign’s new abilities with interactive fixed layout EPUBs (FXL).
- Once you know the basics of Adobe DPS, you’ll surely want to start creating really cool interactive effects! But how? Check out Keith Gilbert’s new Adobe Digital Publishing Suite Interactive Techniques from lynda.com.
- Speaking of DPS, have you ever wanted to use InDesign’s animation features in a DPS app? Now you can use in5 to automatically create Web overlays!
- Did you know that DPS is not just for tablets? It can output to a Windows 8.1 app now, too!
- Roland Dreger made this movie about cool effects you can create with text on a path; there’s no audio, but the dialog boxes are in German (which makes it hard to follow sometimes).
- Practical Typography is both a good book about typography (both print and web), and a great example of how a book can function inside a web browser. No, it wasn’t made with InDesign. But it’s cool anyway.
- I really love Adobe’s Ink and Slide hardware, so it was cool to see it listed as one of the 2014 top tech innovations of the year by Popular Science.
- Can font design really help people with dyslexia? Probably not, though some typographic fine-tuning can help.
- When you publish a book, should you put the whole thing online for free? It might seem crazy, but the folks at Take Control eBooks (also the publishers of the awesome TidBits newsletter) think so. See why.
- Bob Levine offers a great explanation of why he’s (finally) excited about EPUB.
- The delightful Ben Schott joined us in Podcast 209, but you can hear even more from him (and see his slideshow) in this video from his talk at the Type Directors Club in NY.
- I love Trish Witkowski’s Fold-of-the-Week videos; here’s an amazing one that you’ve got to see.
- Who doesn’t like watching TED talks? Here are five awesome TED talks about publishing (in one form or another).
- Need a script that will automatically insert commas (or dots) into long numbers? You can find a free one here.
- When Mary Lester wanted a vector path in InDesign that looked like a thick pencil line, she turned to InDesign’s older sister, Illustrator!
- Terry White published his annual gift guide as a fixed layout EPUB from InDesign! (Yes, it’s 93 MB. Ooof! But it’s cool.)
Enjoy!
Great video, guys! Keep them coming.
