ParticipantOk … I went to the objects pallet … I selected each object setting, one at a time, until one of them indicated a black border. Changed the setting to no line, problem solved.
Rich Harvey
ParticipantBut it seems as though everything is set to “no fill” or “no color.” There must be a hidden setting somewhere.

ParticipantWell, David … Based on what I’m doing the answer is “yes” … AND “no.”
If I created a blank document (300 pages), and I got to “place,” I can select an InDesign document. Check the “import options” box so you can see everything.
Now, the cursor loads with the document pages, and a PAINTBRUSH appears. Click and place a page.
Unfortunately, once I place the page, I can’t edit it. It appears like a graphic, but the links panel highlights both the Indesign document and any graphic contained within. So, apparently you can edit the original, and the link will update … it’s similar to editing a graphic in photoshop, and updating in InDesign.
Keep in mind, I’m still using CS3 …
Rich Harvey
ParticipantActually, I just discovered this link …
https://creativepro.com/placing-all-the-pages-of-a-pdf-inside-indesign.php
But I believe this is for a recent version. I’m using the rapidly aging CS3 version. Is there shortcut in this old dinosaur?

ParticipantWow … that takes proofreading to a whole new level. “Oh, yeah, keep your eyes open for a few thousand missing words. Thanks!”
Rich Harvey
ParticipantI’ll give it a try … in the meantime, is there a more conventional solution to the Page Variable thing>?
Rich Harvey
ParticipantI’ve never heard of that … you mean just place the document into an existing document?
Rich Harvey
ParticipantLuLu … they publish hardcover books … If CreateSpace did hardcover books, this would be a non-issue, since they did the paperback.
Rich Harvey
ParticipantDavid …
I went ahead and turned off FACING PAGES … I made a master page for R and L hand pages. It was a little bit tedious … BUT … I used the script to adjust all the left hand pages … Then, in the “Pages” menu I selected the left hand pages (holding down CTRL) and applied the correct master page, to get the margins adjusted correctly. It added an hour onto the task, but the script you suggested (and the CTRL click and apply) really made the take easier.
THANKS!

ParticipantHi, David …
Thanks for the additional answer.
If I choose to unselect “Facing Pages” (which I won’t), every page adopts the margins of the RIGHT master page. The document doesn’t automatically reconfigure. I suppose (in the future) if I want non-facing pages, and a different master for L/R, that’s something that has to be initiated from the very beginning. I think CS5 might do this automatically but (alas) I am still working in CS3.
It’s getting a little bit frustrating to see the solutions for CS5 and up users … like driving a 1990s car while everyone has bluetooth and built-in GPS.

ParticipantHi, Graham:
Thanks for your answer. That only solves part of the problem, though. I created a Left and Right master page. If I turn off “Facing Pages,” it applied the specs only for the Left master page. As a result, all of the page headers are off-center. I use .5″ off margin at top, bottom, and outside. For the INSIDE margin, I use .75″ margin. (A print-on-demand service like CreateSpace seems to require a larger interior margin). When I turn off facing pages, all my page folios shift (usually favoring the left).
If I don’t make some kind of adjustment to the graphic, then it just bleeds onto the next page as well. These pages were originally built for bleeds on three sides (which may not have been correct, but it worked well enough).

ParticipantHA! I figured it out … sort of …
I saw this link when I searched InDesign Secrets …https://creativepro.com/secret-life-of-character-styles-and-running-headers.php
Made no sense at first … then I suddenly got it to work!

ParticipantMy text variables are listing the chapter # and Title …
“60. Stray Thoughts on a Picket Line”
I would really like it to NOT display the chapter number in the heading. Everything is typed on one line.Any thoughts? I’m using Indesign CS3.
