    Ok, that would be the reason, I had a return in the heading. The reason I did this is because if I didn't do it there would have been a hyphen between one of the words with only two letters on the second which looked really funny.

    The odd thing still is that the text variable is set as being the first on the page and yet the variable is showing the last line of the header. I suppose if I wasn't having this problem I could make a text variable for both the first and last line so that both lines would show up in the header. Do you have any ideas as to why my text variable is showing me the last line when I set it for the first line?

    Well the text variable isn't picking up the whole paragraph it is only picking up the second line of the paragraph. Is there a way that I can pick up both lines in the text variable? If it can pick up a paragraph it should be able to pick up both lines of text I would think.

    I got it to work now. It appeared to be a bug from InDesign. I had to restart my computer because it was running slow then when I tried adding the text variable this time it mostly worked. The only thing that isn't currently working is the text variables don't work with one chapter that has two lines of text in it's heading. It is only picking up the second line of text and leaving out the first.

    I tried the Smart Text Reflow and it mostly worked. It added in about 20-30 pages but I noticed that it left some of the offset text offset. I think this might have happened since there were some text blocks that directly followed other text blocks and there was no way to expand the text block since another text block was in it's way.

    That was interesting information you provided for people with poor sight. It will come in handy as I am putting this together. Thanks!

    I have decided to just go ahead and make the quote mark a drop down as well. I was looking through a magazine the other day where I saw it used that way and it worked well. I never noticed that it was done that way before. I assumed that quote marks don't “drop down” like letters do so you wouldn't apply a drop cap style to the quote mark but I was wrong.

    @David Blatner

    Actually I was origionally thinking about only having the letter, not the quote, be the drop cap. Maybe having them both won't be such a bad idea though. I will look at it both ways and see which is better.

    @everyone

    I am out of the office today but I will take a look at what people have suggested I do when I get back on Monday.

    Ok, I understand now. I was reading “Real World Indesign” and they tell you to set up the drop cap as a character style then go to the paragraph panel to “drop caps and nested styles.” When done this way it doesn't save it as a paragraph style and when it doesn't save it as a paragraph style you can't reapply it. I guess I got confused when there were two ways to get to “drop caps and nested styles” and one way doesn't save it as a paragraph style.

    Thanks for the help, this my first time using InDesign for making a book. The past few years I have only been using it for simple things like flyers and posters.
