MemberI have a book shelf that is mostly full of design books. The following are the ones I find most useful:
Creativity for Graphic Design – This book doesn’t talk about specific design techniques but provides info that you need to know about the designer/client relationship. Man I wish they made me read this book in school rather then have to learn some things the hard way.
Making and Breaking the Grid
White Graphics
Typography Workbook
Letterhead and Logo Design 9
100 Habits of Successful graphic designers
Fingerprint
GraphicDesign/Seattle
Color Design Workbook
Real World InDesign
The New Big Book of Color
Web Design Index by Content (Neat book since it contains a DVD of all the content in the book. No need to worry about not being able to access certain web sites when they get updated to different designs since it is all in the book.)January 24, 2013 at 4:57 pm in reply to: Best way to convert company's ID badges from vertical format to horizontal? 6.0.6 #64005Kip
MemberNo, the badges are not all in one file or based on a master page at the moment. As I have been learning from talking with people that would have been the best way to automate this task. I put the badges in one document since I don't have one of those printers that can just print one badge at a time. I figured it didn't make sense to buy one since I don't print enough badges. I will print a large set and then I don't print any for a long time. Unfortantly I haven't upgraded to CS6 since my computer can't run it. I will look into liquid layouts when I do eventually upgrade. It sounds like it can be really useful.

MemberDavid, I missed your reply on this since it got sent to my spam folder. Checking that option worked for me. I also found that I had some paragraph returns put into my speradsheet. That was an accident; I pressed return so that the spreadsheet app would select the next cell on the line below it but unknown to me it was also adding a paragraph return to some of the cells I was typing in. A blog post on this would be great.

Member@metadesign solutions Does SpellPlus also do grammar check? Does it run on PowerPC Macs?

MemberI think that it is exciting to see a way to make ebooks that is easier than the way it currently is in ID. Also it is great whenever I hear of a new competitor to Adobe as they really need a lot more competition, they have become too much of a monopoly.
I am not sure what I think about keeping it iPad only. I can actually see a little bit of logic behind keeping it as a iPad only solution (other then the obvious reason of selling more Apple hardware.) Beyond just selling regular ebooks with text in them iBooks is now more interactive. What other tablets could this content currently be ported to? It is beyond the scope of black and white kindles, the Kindle Fire does a terrible job of magazine layouts so I can't imagine it working well with interactive textbooks. Just trying to navigate a single page requires a ton of pinching and zooming. Who wants to do that with their textbooks?
The Nook is a better performing tablet but it also doesn't have a big enough screen to do the multimedia features in iBooks well. At the moment the tablets that are selling is the iPad at the high end and small screen or black and white tablets. There may be other successful large screen tablets in the future but to my knowledge the iPad is the only one that is really selling at the moment therefore it makes sense that their authoring software works exclussively with what is currently the best option available.
I am really hoping that iBooks adds the ability to annotate and bookmark audiobooks. I like listening to audiobooks and have thought many times that it would be useful mark a certain part in the audio to review later.

MemberSomeone answered this question for me. You have to check “continue from previoius document” in the book panel.

MemberIt's too bad the company doesn't have a free trial of the plugin. However I just talked to them and it looks like they will give you a 30 day money back guarantee is the product doesn't meet your needs.

MemberI like how it works with the preflight panel, that should make it easy to work with. I'll tell them you sent me. Thanks

MemberThanks Anne-Marie, I finally got it fixed. I got a little frusterated for a while because someone on the Adobe forums was saying things that were contradicting what you and Real World InDesign were saying about using character styles. I got burned out and had to put this issue on hold for a little while. In the end for some reason the tab leader wasn't set up right in the paragraphs style.
I was still wondering if there is an advantage in changing the leader dots though nested styles rather than just changing those atributes through the leader dots character style?

MemberGreat! That worked, thanks. I wonder why clicking “update toc” eliminates the leaders between the chapter title and it's corresponding numbers? I can put each leader back in one at a time but I wonder what the reason is for why it takes them out?

March 4, 2011 at 3:11 pm in reply to: How can I get saddle stitch to work across several chapters in the book panel? #58888Kip
Member“It was intended for short booklets that someone would print on an office printer, which as a matter of practicality are usually single documents not more than 20-24 finished pages.”
I was printing out a short booklet that is about 42 pages or about 11 sheets of paper. I was originally told that it would be good to use the book feature even for relatively short documents but now I am almost wishing I had left the whole book in one InDesign document. The booklet will start out with a very low run so I am not ready to send it to a press just yet.
“An InDesign document doesn't “know” (has no metadata that indicates) it is part of a book. That information is in the .indb book file.”
It is kind of odd that InDesign calls the feature “print booklet” and then it doesn’t relate to the book panel! I understand your point on why it doesn’t work though.
“What you can do, if you have Acrobat, is output your book from the book panel as a single PDF, then use Acrobat to print the booklet. Open the file in Acrobat, select File > Print, and then the fun starts.”
Someone suggested that I use a plugin from within InDesign to handle the imposition. Do you think this is something that is necessary for me or are Acrobat’s print features all I need?
Thank you for all your help. I don’t know how else I could have figured this out since InDesign books I have read don’t mention In-Design's booklet printing limitations.

MemberI was listening to an InDesign Secrets podcast yesterday and heard an ad for AutoFlow Pro. Just tried it today and it worked. So far it has been the only auto text flow plugin that I can make work. Hopefully it will stay working and not quit like with what happened with Smart Text Reflow.

MemberIs there anything I need to do to get the AutoPage feature to work or does it just kick in automatically? I imported some text into a text block but then it just became offset rather then adding more pages. I have been looking under preferences to see if anything there would make it start working but so far no luck.
