    Yeah. What Aaron said!

Whilst it is always nice to see a recommendation for CircularFLO, thanks George ;) I would necessarily advise a move away from reflowable to fixed layout.

Having said that, there is a lot wrong with InDesign EPUB exports and CircularFLO is fixing them in a major update this Spring which improves reflowable as well as fixed layout ebooks. Hi Patrick

As David suggests, PDF may still be the best option for you and you could add links in the PDF to a printable version if you wished to allow that.

You may be interested in how my company’s product MasterPlan can allow secure sharing of PDF and interactive EPUB pages to any permitted web page. With support for full text search (including across multiple publications) and TOCs in the PDFs and EPUBs. More info https://see.masterplan.circularsoftware.com

Feel free to contact me at https://www.circularsoftware.com/contact/ for more info.

    Hi Patrick

What sort of interactions beyond the TOC links do you currently include in your PDFs?

I’d suggest PDF is much more suited to printing than EPUB and, depending on your interaction requirements, there may be other ways to keep using PDF whilst losing the need for Flash.

    Thanks

    Hi Keith and Justin

Keith – thanks for the files, I have sent you a working example made with CircularFLO including an OAM working in Apple Books in iOS :)

Justin – it’s not right to claim that iOS blocks embedded content in EPUBs. It IS true that OAMs exported by InDesign do not work in Apple Books on iOS but OAM content can work in EPUB in Apple Books on iOS when handled manually or exported using CircularFLO. Works for in5 content too, let’s have a chat…

    Thanks

    Hi George

Welcome to the wild frontier of digital publishing, they don’t make it easy do they?…

In cases like this Google is your friend. ERROR ITMS-9000 shows you have a file in your EPUB that is not meant to be there and ERROR ITMS-90228 shows you have five images larger than Apples’s 4 megapixel limit.

There will be more information after the error code that points you directly to the problems, albeit in a unfriendly code way. Let me know if you need help deciphering these…

You can fix individual image output sizes using InDesign’s Object export options. Here’s a video on that https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/how-to/indesign-object-export-options.html if you need to control image sizes for an entire book in one place then you can use the Boilerplate JPEG options in my company’s software CircularFLO More info https://www.circularflo.com/userguide/?mp=Client3333/Job1000/034 and free trial here https://www.circularflo.com/download/

If the ITMS-9000 error lists the file name ‘iTunesMetadata-original.plist’ then it has probably been (very annoyingly!) introduced by iTunes itself when previewing the book. Try only opening in iBooks and not through iTunes to get around this.

    Good luck!

    Hi George

It sounds like you may be having a problem caused by fonts substitution. Are your fonts OpenType or TrueType? Postscript Type 1 fonts are not supported in EPUB.

I’d need a bit more info though before I can help further… When you say ‘It works fine online via a browser’ how are you viewing it? Are you viewing the EPUB or the individual pages in a browser. If so, you may have the same fonts active on your computer for use in InDesign and therefore they are working in YOUR browser, but they are not the fonts from inside the EPUB.

When you say ‘when take it into iTunes Producer’ but have you first viewed in iBooks on the Mac, what do you see there?

You mention Amazon in the title of this post, but it is not easy to get to Amazon from an InDesign generated fixed layout EPUB. My company’s software CircularFLO https://www.circularflo.com may be able to help you there…

I’ll try to help you if I can have more info.

    Hi Keith

I assume you are using fixed layout EPUB (reflowable EPUB would not work) so firstly, have you validated the EPUB? I recommend you get pagina EPUB-Checker (Freeware) https://www.pagina-online.de/produkte/epub-checker/ and drag the EPUB to see potential problems.

The good news is that you are aiming at iPad and iBooks and complex HTML5 animations definitely do work there. Check this marvellous example – https://www.galdosgift.com

I think I should be able to help but I’d need to take a look at your files. Is that possible?
If it is a quick fix I wouldn’t charge… but if troubleshooting becomes more involved then I’d need paying for my time.

    Hi Eduardo

Although you can insert an HTML snippet in InDesign this is a long way off being able to embed a full website as you describe. What you want is not going to be possible inside any regular EPUB reader, I’m afraid.

My company’s software CircularFLO https://www.circularflo.com allows for the placing of more complex web code such as Hype animations and puzzle widgets etc. but this is still a way off adding a complex website that would need to communicate outside of the EPUB to make purchases

Technically speaking the EPUB standard stipulates that all content must be inside the EPUB and so available when offline. There are some edge cases where streaming of video can be possible for instance and I have recently been involved in a project that linked out to Spotify playlists.

The only other solution is to take your EPUB onto the web in a EPUB reader like Readium Cloud Reader. We currently use this with our MasterPlan LIVE software e.g. https://www.galdosgift.com/book-sample?mp=Client3333/Job9781999857608/002 but by then you are in a browser and on the web and so for your project you would probably just want to link to the client’s website at this point?

    Hope this helps

    Hi Eduardo

If you are not using DRM to restrict access to the EPUB, then the Microsoft Edge browser for Windows 10 is also a good EPUB reader that supports fixed layout these days.

Otherwise Windows users might try the Adobe Digital Editions https://www.adobe.com/solutions/ebook/digital-editions.html until Readium 2 Desktop comes of age https://www.edrlab.org/readium/readium-2/

Unfortunately you are not alone waiting for a fully featured EPUB reader for Windows. Bob Levine laments the problem in his blog here https://www.boblevine.us/the-fixed-layout-epub-missing-piece-reliable-readers-for-windows-and-android/

    Good Luck!

Hi Radhakrishnan, you are not alone! it’s not as easy as we’d all hope but I do have some suggestions.

Your EPUB can be freely presented on a website using Readium CloudReader
    https://github.com/readium/readium-js-viewer/releases

My company’s tool MasterPlan LIVE simplifies this process and adds extra features such as offering free samples, allowing search and access control.
    e.g. https://www.galdosgift.com/book-sample?mp=Client3333/Job9781999857608/002

To view an ebook on a Kindle Fire you will need to convert the EPUB to a MOBI / KF8 file.
My company’s tool CircularFLO simplifies this process for fixed layout https://www.circularflo.com or for reflowable you could try https://forums.adobe.com/thread/2169023

You can offer a direct download link to the EPUB and MOBi file from your site so customers can then open in iBooks, Google Play or maybe Adobe Digital Editions. However if you want to restrict your customer from sharing the file you will currently need to consider going through a retailer.
    e.g. Kindle Direct Publishing https://kdp.amazon.com

    Good luck!

    Hi Radhakrishnan

Although an EPUB is essentially a zipped folder of web code there are a couple of files in there that are not to be zipped when packaging into EPUB. So really you should get into the habit of using a utility. There are a few free options:

eCanCrusher (as Paul suggests) is available from Rorohiko https://www.docdataflow.com/ecancrusher/ and is cross platform but if you are on a Mac I suggest ePubZipUnzip – https://bit.ly/ePubZipUnzip

Also pagina EPUB-Checker from Pagina will combine packaging with validation using epubcheck – https://www.pagina.gmbh/produkte/epub-checker/

    Good Luck!

    Hi Catherine

Was the EPUB created using InDesign?
If so, the fonts will have been embedded but will also have been obfuscated.

Have you tried Adobe Digital Editions which should work on PC and also handle fonts obfuscated in this way.

If needed it is possible to replace the fonts and remove obfuscation. I can help with that if needed.

Ah I see. Well, that case I’d recommend using a different EPUB validation tool.

I use Pagina EPUB-Checker which runs on the Mac/PC desktop and is free to use. You get that here https://www.pagina.gmbh/produkte/epub-checker/ (the site starts in german but scroll down half way to see English notes and download links).

    Good luck!

    Hi Angela

There is no need to worry. The fixed layout EPUB standard does not have a limitation on file size and 34MB is perfectly manageable and quite typical.
Video and other rich media can easily take file sizes beyond that and retailers can and do handle larger files (Apple for example have much larger limits of up to 2GB!)

You may want to consider compression though and the trade of between quality and size. Do you need to use PNGs for transparency? Otherwise you may want to export your images out to a more compressed JPEG.

I assume you are using InDesign, which defaults to exporting PNGs but you may find you are able to change that in your EPUB Fixed Layout Export Options > Conversion Settings > Format.

    I hope that helps :)

Just an update on this for those who may be interested…

Dropbox have retired their public folders I have moved this example to here https://www.circularsoftware.com/CircularFLO_Online/readium.html?epub=../../CircularFLO_v5_1_promo_CC2015

Also Readium will be retiring their Chrome extension in 2018. However, this DOES NOT mean the end of Readium, as the Readium project is still going strong see more info here https://www.edrlab.org/readium/

Solutions like this example which uses the (Readium CloudReader) and products based around that mean hosting your EPUB content on your own website is possible.
