in reply to: Is there such a job as Book Designer? #59878

    JennaO,

I actually had that job for about 4 years. Our small design company designed/laid out book for the Meredith Corporation in Des Moines, Iowa. Until about 2+ years ago when their books devision was cut they published many DIY, gardening, cooking, children's, and other types of books. We did books for brands like The Home Depot and their 1-2-3 series, Stanley Tools, Better Homes and Gardens, and others. They relied pretty heavily on outsourcing the book layout and design to freelancers and small design companies like ours.

Even though you won't find and book design jobs at Meredith anymore, you'll probably find some possibilities with Wiley or Taunton Press. They still do quite a bit of book design and probably still don't do all of it in-house.

Something to do, is find a type of book that you would like to work on, and try to contact/get to know the author. Don't worry, most people that are authors for how-to books that I've know are pretty down to earth (unlike many famous novelists). They might be able to help you make a contact inside one of their publishers. Then it's just a matter of making a good sales pitch/proposal/bid and then delivering on the product.

    Good luck,

    Joel

I haven't done a lot with EPUB yet, but it looks like in the EPUB export dialog you can select an existing CSS file. So, I would say that you should be able to go back and edit in indesign and just select the existing CSS file on export.

    I hope that helps.

Just look at the tools on the left (in the navigation pane) for the layers button (looks like two overlapping diamonds).

    Enjoy!

Just because they are on the master pages does not mean that they are on separate layers. It will be a bit easier to put them on a background layer because they are on the master pages. Give this a try.

    1. Open the layers panel.
    2. Create a new layer named Background and drag it under the existing layer or layers.
    3. for each master page, select the background image and in the layers panel drag the little colored box next to the layer name down to the background layer. This should move the selected image to the background layer.
    4. after you've moved all your background image to a new layer you can show or hide the background layer. So, from indesign, you can either export two PDFs, one with the layer hidden, one with it visible in, or just export one file with acrobat layers (see my first response).

Hope it's not too much extra work for you. Enjoy!

I think you'll have to export the book from indesign using the OPI settings to remove the background images and then print the PDF.

If you have all of you background images on a separate layer, you can export your PDF to Acrobat version 6 or newer and check the box that says “creat acrobat layers”. Then you can hide the layer in Acrobat and print. :)

    Hope that helps!

I tried to do the same thing last year with no sucess. I don't think it's possible with GREP. It sees them as index markers (^I), but you can't actually do anything with them in the GREP search that I have been able to find.

You might have to dive into a bit of applescripting to be able to search for XML elements.

    Sorry bro,

Try going to the menu Type > Document Footnote Options… Try changing the separator from the default “tab” or “^t” to a single space, or whatever you want it to be. also, apply a paragraph style for the footnotes. Now you should be able to do a text search for ” ” (two spaces, or whatever it it that you have that is wrong) be sure to search only the text with the footnote paragraph style. Then replace with ” ” (a single space or whatever you want to have as a spacer.)

    Hope that helps.
