ParticipantI’m sad to report that we are all using CC 2017 now, and crashing and losing preferences has not gone away. We work on literally 1,000’s of files, so the idea of “save as” is not a viable option. It’s not unusual to have several crashes a day.
And I’ve done a complete wipe of all Adobe products, trashing all preferences, and reinstalling from scratch. Even had an Adobe tech assist with that.
Problem is still not solved.

ParticipantJust a follow-up to confirm. Uninstalling RDW cleared up my curly brackets problem in IDML files, too. I’d still like to use the plugin, so I look to hearing from Herb how to resolve without uninstalling.

ParticipantI also get the curly bracket when I export to IDML, and I have RDW installed, so I’d be curious of an answer, too. For now, I’ll uninstall that plugin, to hopefully resolve the problem.

ParticipantI also have frequent crashes, with the same resulting loss of all preferences, and return to OOB condition. I am using Adobe CC 2015. I have have 8 people who work under me, and several, but not all, experience the same crashes — so often, in fact, that a member of my team wrote a script for saving a copy of the preferences and restoring them after a crash.

ParticipantThis works great for GREP which is intended to apply to words at the start of the sentence, but I am working on one which is intended to apply to all the words between braces (\{) and I am finding that it gets broken by the soft return. Unfortunately Jong’s solution doesn’t help here, because I don’t have control over how the customer service team decides to wrap the text.
Here’s an example paragraph:
Enjoy our {description; i.e., indoor/outdoor/infinity} pool, located on {location within hotel}. Pool towels, umbrellas and chaise lounge [soft return]
services are available daily, beginning at {time}. {Insert optional text about pool-side or [soft return]
beach-side cuisine and beverages are [soft return]
available during specific hours.}The object is to get the code to apply a character color to everything between braces, but only between braces. So, normally, I would just put:
\{.+?\}
But that is getting broken by the soft returns.

ParticipantHere is a GREP for getting rid of orphans.
Apply a NO Break character style (a style where the only thing specified is that No Break is forced on) to the following:
(\w+ \w+)[[:punct:]]$

ParticipantI am completely converted over to InDesign, but this is one of the few remaining irksome things.
In Quark, I can type 7+3/8 into the field and it will convert it automatically to 7.375, but in InDesign, if I type in 7+3/8, it says “invalid expression.”
That is one of the few things I still like better about Quark.

ParticipantJong hits the nail on the head again. Even though we may not agree on some nuances of typesetting, I am constantly amazed at his wealth of knowledge. Kudos to Jongware.

ParticipantLee, I'm with David. I also find it odd that the quotes would show differently from one computer to another, if they were constructed correctly in the first place. Did orielwen's solution work?

ParticipantBy the way, it's probably worth mentioning two more things here:
1. dragging the opposite direction will remove columns/rows.
2. dragging either direction can be done to add/subtract multiple columns/rows at a time, all depending on how far you drag.

ParticipantBut, I think that Jongware is on even a better track for solving your text received from outside. I was merely talking about typing them in when you are setting the type yourself.
P.S. I disagree with using the Symbol font, if it can be helped, though, because many fonts have their own styled double and single prime that go with the font.

ParticipantOkay, maybe I'm missing something here, but on the Mac we've always used the following (where available in the font face):
double prime (inch mark), using CONTROL + SHIFT + ' (quote mark)
single prime (foot mark), using CONTROL + ' (quote mark)
