September 8, 2017 at 10:40 am in reply to: Cannot copy necessary linked file(s)? – Error Message #97900
Eric Chapman
MemberI just had the same problem in InDesign CS6. Although when trying to package it, ID said all 13 linked files were problems, only one had “/” in it. It exports to a package just fine now that the “/” is replaced with a “-“. Thanks to all who contributed to this thread!

MemberThanks, again! I'll see. One way or the other I'll find some way to get where we need to be! I appreciate your advice.

Fonts that are not in your system somehow slip through through the Scripting interface — in some ways you can “see” them, but you cannot set them in a Find/Change operation, so you cannot “do” anything with them …
Unfortunately, this seems to be one of the few things that cannot be done with a script!
Thank you once again for the information. There must be some way to do what I'm trying to do … Maybe there is some automated way to edit the font names in the IDML files I'm getting? Or some other way …

If al you want to do is change one font to another (including its use in styles), you have to use Find Font.
Thank you. Well, here's what I want to do: I want to use the plug-in Multi Find/Change (https://www.automatication.com/……php?id=12) to find and change several fonts every time I receive a certain set of documents. Although I alledgedly got and installed all the fonts in these documents, something with the fonts is not right. When I use Find Font, ten of the fonts (three font families) have the yellow warning sign next to them, and it says they are missing. With Find Font, I can find and replace them, but I can't save the query and repeat it later. However, with Find/Change, I cannot even find them. When I use Find/Change > GREP tab > Find Format > Specify Attributes to Find > Basic Character Formats > Font Family, they are listed [Like This] at the bottom of the list, and I can put them in the query. But when I run the query, it says, “Cannot Find Match.” I know the fonts are there, though, and the Find Font method lists all the pages they are on. Any advice? Thanks.

Furry, in the Find Font dialog there is a checkbox that makes the font also change inside styles when ticked. Doesn”t that work for you?
Jongware, Thanks for that tip! I didn't notice it either. But probably because I don't use the Find Font dialog much, but rather the GREP tab of Find/Change (Cmd-F). So…I'm wondering if in the GREP tab of Find/Change I can do the same thing, i.e. “Redefine Style When Changing All”? Thanks!

MemberSolved: the problem was simply that the font was not activated! It came up in the drop-down list at the top, but the activated fonts in the document are below a gray line at the bottom of the list. I thought it strange that I saved one font name in the query, but when I selected that same saved query, a different font name was substituted. As it turns out, InDesign's find/change defaulted to Myriad Pro only because the font whose name was saved in the query was not activated.
Still curious, though, is this: I think Minion Pro is my default font, not Myriad Pro, so I'm not sure why ID chose Myriad Pro (not that it matters now). I did some fiddling with the default font as per info here (http://blog.gilbertconsulting.com/2010/02/changing-indesign-default-font.html), but that did not change what ID substituted :)

The script you're looking for is FindChangeByList and it actually comes with InDesign. […]
There's another script called RecordFindChange that you can get here:
https://forums.adobe.com/message/2580645
that makes it easier to get the text queries into the proper format for the text file.
Thank you very, very much! I will try to make it work. And thanks for the warning about re-saving with a different name so as to preserve the originals.

MemberCould anyone help me make a Java script that I could edit to put in the names of the fonts I want to replace and the ones I want to replace them with? I found this for AppleScript (https://macscripter.net/viewtop…..p?id=31980), but I don't understand scripting, and I'm assuming it's better to use Java so I can share the script across platforms. Of course, on a font-by-font basis, one can just use Type>Find Font… and then replace it, but when there are lots of fonts and one has to repeat the process regularly, it'd be nice to have a script. Thank you! -Eric

MemberHow exactly do I install this script in ID (I have CS4 and CS5.5 (Mac OS 10.6.8)? And is it Java or AppleScript? I found this explanation of how to install a script (https://creativepro.com/how…..design.php), but since what Jongware provided is the text of the script and not a script file, I don't know what to save it as (.js, .jsx, .as, .scpt).
I went to Apple Script Editor and tried to save it as .scpt, since that's what came up. I got a syntax error: “Unknown token can't go after this “)”. It was referring to the ); at the end of Main();. So I'm assuming this was a Java script. Next I went to TextEdit and pasted in Jongware's script saving it as Language_Change_Throughout.jsx. I put it in the Scripts Panel folder, and it now shows up in ID CS5.5. And it works beautifully! Thank you, Jongware!
I am posting this simply for other newbies who might not know how to install the script text above.

MemberOn another list I got this suggestion:
“InDesign IDML files are some sort of zip archive. You could try to search for specific font names in all sub-files of the IDML files after having extracted them, replace the font name with the name of the new font, then recreate the IDML files and open them again in InDesign to check.”
I did change the suffix to .zip and found a Resources folder with a fonts.xml file in it. But I have no clue what to do next — i.e. how to change font names, etc. or even if this is the right and/or only place to do it.

You can paste the text into a highlghted cell and each hard return in the text will trigger another row (by default, hard returns create rows and tabs create columns) so providing there are no tabs in the text it will be confined to a single column.
Well, Stuart, I've been trying to paste text into table cells and have the various paragraphs “trigger another row”, and have had no success. I've copied 5 paragraphs of text, making sure there are hard returns after each paragraph, and then selected a table cell (Cmd-slash or Escape when in cell) and pasted (Cmd-V). Everything goes into one cell. So I tried Place (Cmd-D) and selected a saved MS Word file with that data. Same result. I turned on “Show Import Options” after selecting Cmd-D and tried various things there when importing the Word file, but still no success. What might I be doing wrong?
The only way I can find to work around this is to create an Excel spreadsheet, paste the data in there (it correctly pastes into one cell per paragraph in Excel, staying in one column). Worse case scenario, I could do this, but it's cumbersome. Whenever I have to reimport the .xls file, I have to re-size the cell widths manually. Any advice would be most appreciated. Thank you.

As long as the text frame spans 2 pages then so can your table. The table can be autoflowed into as many spreads as necessary by clicking on the red overflow sybol on the text frame's out port. With the cursor now loaded, add a second page and shift and click inside the empty text frame (you will need to have created a text frame on the master page spread first).
Excellent! Thank you. I haven't been able to get back to this project yet, since another has taken precedence. But your comments and advice are helpful. I needed some help since I was at a standstill. I'll post more after I have time to work on it some more. I appreciate your taking the time to help me out.

I found this, so I guess it is possible to “map” clipboard data across cells. I'll have to play with it and see how it works. I'm not sure as to whether Cmd-D (“Place”) will work the same way or not. I'll work with it, maybe tomorrow, and see what I can do. Looks promising.

“Pasting Data Into Tables
You can paste data into a table, but before you choose Paste from the Edit menu (or press Command-V/Ctrl-V) pay attention to what’s selected. If the text cursor is flashing inside a cell when you paste, InDesign pastes all the data into that one cell. If you select the cell itself (press Esc to toggle between selecting what’s inside the cell and the cell itself), and if the data you’re pasting has tabs or carriage returns in it, InDesign maps the clipboard data across more than one cell. If you need to update the data from an Excel document that you’ve turned into an InDesign table, you can copy the cells in Excel, switch to InDesign, select one or more cells in your table, and paste.”

Try using the tools on the alignment panel.
Window >Object & Layout > Align
This should have an option that will solve your problem.
If you want to learn about some of the other tools in InDesign, consider attending this InDesign webinar I am hosting, which shows how to create a newsletter. I know it's not exactly what you are making, but the tutorial might be helpful to you: https://bit.ly/elNXbs
Thanks for our input. Problem is that the text boxes are “objects” and they don't need to be aligned, but the paragraphs in them need to be. I tried what you suggested, but couldn't find anything that would help.

Memberstuarth64 said:I would suggest that you create a table with 9 columns and a row for each paragraph. Because table cells auto expand to accomodate the text they contain, the height of the entire row will adjust accordingly. The stroke and inset values of the cells can be set to zero so that it does not appear as a table when previewed.
Thank you for the idea. I have never yet used tables in InDesign. :) Some questions came to mind:
(1) Can I place text flowing it one paragraph at a time into table cells? The text is either WORD or .txt or .rtf. Although it would be divided into 66 sections (books of the Bible), there would be a total of 31102 cells for only ONE column for the entire book! Cutting and pasting little pieces or splitting up the text file would be impracticable. It'd be great if I could automatically assign text pieces (up to a forced line break) into the cells and have the table automatically add new cells until there are no more text blocks (paragraphs) to add.
(2) Will the cells flow to the next page okay automatically?
(3) Can the table to across the entire spread, not page?
Any other advice on learning to use tables well?
