MemberWhen you finish typing the word in the box, you have to click “add.” Then you click done when finished. Sounds like you were clicking “done” before you “added” it.

MemberIf you mean can you use characters such as * and numbers at the same time, I believe the answer is no. You have to use either footnote characters or numbers.
So far as the footnote numbers (the text callouts) and the actual footnote number–yes–you can make it a color. You would have to use character styles sheets and nesting.

MemberAndy–I’m in book publishing and have been for going on 25 years. We never use baseine grid. It maybe okay for novels and things like that, but if you have heads and extracts and poetry on different leading, you end up with uneven spacing. And if a head falls at the top of the page, it really screws things up.
I work with picas and points instead of mm (but it’s the same concept): Use specific space before and after. And you never want the text below a head to adjust.
I personally HATE the lock to baseline grid, and personally think it’s a lazy way of doing things. I can’t tell you the number of jobs I get from designers that use it. And I change the file. Each and every time.
So long as you use specific leading, specific spacing above and below for even lines, and set your baseline grid in your file preferences, there is no need for lock to baseline grid. An exception may be on a chapter opener where the number of lines varies due to the leading of the chapter title, and then it’s okay to use lock to baseline grid for the first paragraph.
Other than that–I never use it.

MemberWhat kinds of problems are they having? What type of errors?
So far as using plain text files, you have to realize that any formatting will be lost in plain text files. Things like italic, bold, etc.
So far as different versions of word and the problem they are experiencing–it’s tough to say. I’ve never had a problem cutting/copying and pasting from Word into an Indesign file (so long as it’s not a lot of stuff). A paragraph or two here and there should not be a problem..
I guess it depends upon how they are updating your file. Are they going to re-import the word file into InDesign and redo the whole thing, or do corrections and copy and paste the edits directly from Word to InDesign?
If it’s two word files (their 1st edition is a Word file they’ve saved) and your new one, can’t they just do a compare and accept all changes?
Sorry if I’m misunderstanding the problem they are having.

MemberCan’t you just search for any digit and replace that way? In the find field go to “wildcards” and select any digit. And then in the replace field, put in the font you want to change it to.
Dwayne Harris
Member@Marie:
As you said–the replace part would be a pain if using wildcards. But if you searched for them individually, it could be done.
For example: Search for 3/8. You find the first one and format as you like it. Then copy. Then in your replace field you select copy from pastboard, formatted (or something like that). And then replace all.
Then repeat the process for the others.
I agree that the Proper Fractions script is great. I have the free (limited version), so I do the pastboard thing for searching and replacing.
I really think InDesign should have some sort of fraction ability. Quark had it way back in Quark 4 (it not earlier), by using a free plug-in called Type Tricks (which they later bought). While one can’t search and replace using it (that I know of as I haven’t used Quark in years), at least one had the ability to make a simple fraction if a real fraction was not available.

MemberI can’t think of anything either. I think the only thing I can think of is to make another set of master pages set up for only one solution
The variable would read as
Solution: <first number>
I admit that would be a pain if there are a lot of those pages.

MemberThat’s tough to say. So far as kerning–you really only have 3 choices–metric, zero, and optical. My first thought is optical.
So far as justification–I’d probably make it tight–maybe 75/85/120 or something like that. But don’t forget that justification is the space between words and is separate from kerning.
But that’s just me.
To be honest–it’s all about what you think looks good and what someone thinks looks good.

MemberI’m afraid I’m an idiot when it comes to grep. But you could do a simple search and replace.
1) In the find field, search for any digit + space + letter
2) Replace with the color red
3) Search for red space band
4) Replace with nothing, or designate a point size
5) Search for the color red
6) Replace with black (or the color the text is)Of course, this is under the assumption it’s a one-color job, and the color red is not used. If it’s multi-color, then this probably wouldn’t work.

MemberI checked the comments for that script and came across this:
“You select tables using the text tool. Just select enough of the text that the tables reside in to highlight both tables, and it should work.”
Don’t know if that will work for you or not.

MemberGlad you got it figured it out. My next suggestion was about asking about the story direction thing, but you already found that out.
Dwayne Harris
MemberThat is weird. Is it possible there is a very large left indent on the footnote rule in the document footnote options?
Dwayne Harris
MemberDid you ask the maker of the plug-in? Just wondering because sometimes they have a list of Frequently Asked Questions, and maybe that’s one of them? If their plug-in is popular and used by a lot of people, then maybe others faced the same issue and they have an answer?
Dwayne Harris
Member^^Yup. It would be liquid layout.
