I’m taking it this is just an issue of getting two right-handed pages in a row (instead of spreads)? And as you now, your document is set for spreads.

The easiest way to do what you want (two page ones–which will be a pain if you need to print only page one as you will have two of them) is to click on the second page and renumber as page 1 (it’s under section start). It will automatically shift to the right as you have shown in the second example.

If this happens multiple times, you will have to play around with page shuffling in the palette option and drag the pages around.

Nope. You can’t attach images. But if you have something like drop box, 4shared, or photobucket, you could host the image there and then post the link here.

Intesting stuff, Tom. I have to admit I never used Page Maker or Ventura. I had to use Frame Maker a few times and that was not a fun experience.

I wish Kytek had AutoPage for InDesign. I used it a lot in my Quark Xpress days. But Quark allowed one to make separate H&Js, while InDesign does not. So it can’t be done.

I do the same thing as you when it comes to anchoring art when paging a job. I get it laid out first, and then go back and anchor.

So far as I know, the printers have always cared about margins, gutters, etc when it comes to book publishing.

I’ve had a similar problem when working on a file from someone else (usually the UK). The job is done in mm and I’m using inches for the trim size and head margins, inside margins, gutters, etc. So instead of (for example) 6.5 x 8.25, it comes up something like 6.4231 x 8.21807 (just an example)

Well–the printers say we have to fix that and it has to be 6.5 x 8.25. And all the margins don’t measure correctly, either. So that means I have to go in and adjust everything. And nine times out of ten, the folks in the UK haven’t done their master pages correctly (i.e., basing them on others), so I have to do each master page.

Don’t get me going on the UK files I have to fix where NO style sheets were written. Everything is “basic” and styled by hand. Kinda hard to make the InDesign file ePub ready. Apologies for drifting off topic there.

Well, you’re going to get a lot of varying opinions. Personally–I try to never use align to baseline grid. I work in book publishing, and align to baseline is a pain in the butt.

For your spacing, be warned that I worked in points and picas.

The general rule of thumb is 20 percent. That is, your leading is 20% of your type size. For example, if your type is 10 point, your leading would be 12 point. This is not written in stone. You can have a head that is 11 point with 12 lead, or even 9 point type with 12 leading. The 20% is just a starting point.

For spacing above and below heads, you want to keep it even. If your head is 11 point with 12 point type and you want a line space above it, you would put 12 points (or 1 pica) in the space above. But suppose you wanted a bit of space below the head. Then you could make it 9 points above, 3 points below (which equals 12). Or if you wanted more space above the head and below, you could have 18 points (1p6) above and 6 points below. Remember the 12 thing as that’s your leading. And in the latter instance, the space above/below equaled 24 points, which is based on 12s. The main thing is you want your style sheets to be on even lines.

And you want to set up your baseline grid in your preferences for the leading of your job. And set where the first line begins so that it aligns with your first text line. Once you set that up, there is no need for lock to baseline grid.

If things aren’t set up for even lines and your grid not set correctly, align to baseline grid will do wacky stuff.

If you do use align to baseline grid, never use it on subheads or text following subheads.

I’m always logged out as well (once I quit my browser) and come here again. But that’s true for a lot of sites I go to.

But it only takes a second or two to log-in back in here as my name and password are stored and I just hit “log in”

    Glad to help.

Tom–it’s a bit more complicated, but David is the expert so I will defer to him.

But–we (where I work) are currently working on a job where the book has pull quotes. The pull quotes are supposed to appear in the printed book, but not in the eBook. We are using conditional text for that. Since one is able to show/hide conditional text, this solution may work for you.

But again–David is the expert and hopefully he will chime in again soon.

The conditional text was my first thought. I think it would work for what you want.

in reply to: Opening Indesign CC for the first time… Weird #69603

It looks normal to me. Since you don’t have any documents open (as it appears from your screen shot), you won’t see any close, min, max buttons). You don’t have any documents open, thus you can’t minimize, close, or maximize.

And once you have a document open you will be able to see the pasteboard.

I’m sorry if I don’t understand the problem, but it appears you don’t have a document open.

@David: That’s what I was wondering from the OPs original post. It sounds like the former, and why I asked.

    Hopefully Tom can clarify.

    in reply to: Hyperlinks #69584

@David: Would conditional text work for something like this or no?

I haven’t worked with hyperlinks or conditional text enough to know.
