  • in reply to: insert new pages but skip numbering #80315

The pages still have to be numbered somehow. You can go to the section start where the insert starts, and start it at “A” or something (or “B” if an even page). Then go the section start after the insert, and resume regular numbering:

    For example:

Previous chapter ends on page 98.
Section Start “A” for the six pages (ends on “F”).
Section Start after page “F” (page 99).

Just be sure you don’t have folios on those insert pages.

So far as bleeds, I always set up my files whether they have bleeds or not via document setup. That’s mainly because once in a while they will stick in a photo insert or something.

And I’d probably make a separate master page for your insert.

I don’t think there is (but I could be wrong). I made my own keyboard shortcut.

in reply to: import hyphenation excepts from file? #80133

^^I hate checking line endings as well. But that’s part of the job when paging books. And the more bad breaks I catch and fix means less work for the proof room.

And wow–1354 pages is a lot. Most books I do range from the 400s to 600s, though I have done a few 1,000+ ones.

I’m glad you were able to copy and paste them. But like you said–slow but well worth it.

    Good luck with the job.

So far as I know, you can only import a .txt file into the hyphenation exceptions.

Since I don’t know what font InDesign uses for it’s dialogue boxes and menus, you may not be even to copy and paste the words in without losing the accents.

The only thing I can see you doing is importing the file as you normally do and then doing search and replaces to insert the discretionary hyphens.

Or, possibly, do a spell check and when each word pops up, add to the dictionary, and then go into library once they are added and add the break points?

If this is a one-time document and not a project you will be doing all the time, then I’d forget about the spell check.

Sorry I can’t offer any thing else. Maybe someone else will chime in with an answer.

I’m glad you got it figured out.

To share your snapshots, you’d have to host them. For example, photobucket, 4Share, etc., and then provide the URL link.

If you can do that, I’ll be glad to take a look.

in reply to: Can we lock the Basic Text and Graphic Frame Defaults? #79867

I normally just option + click the basic text or graphic box icon to reset it to the default.

in reply to: Rounded Rectangle Guides? #79420

Ahhh–I should have read your original post better.

So far as I know the guide rules are only straight

Or, select the box, go to “Object” then scroll down to “Convert Shape” and select rounded rectangle.

But–if you use the first option I gave you can control how round the corners are.

in reply to: Rounded Rectangle Guides? #79414

You can just select your rectangle graphic/text box. Then go to “Object” then “Corner Options.” From there you can select rounded corners.

in reply to: Any way to convert InDesign document to Apple Pages format? #79387

I’ve never had that request, but could you export the ID file as a RTF file (and then resave as a Word file). They they can open the Word file with Apple’s Pages?

The text would be all formatted, but things like running heads and stuff would not come through.

And it would depend upon how complicated the design is.

in reply to: Replace multiple instances of placed graphic all at once #79257

    Unless I’m misunderstanding something.

If I want to replace the same image that is used multiple times in a document, I simply select “relink all instances of.”

In the links palette, if an image is used more than once, the main piece of art will have an arrow next to it. If you click the arrow, it opens and shows where all the same pieces are.

What I do is select the art that has the arrow next to it. I right click and tell it to “relink all instances of” and it does them all.

in reply to: Custom arrows (sort of) #79109

    Very cool.

in reply to: Cant Download template #79049

    What template?

in reply to: 2 pasteboards? #79048

There is always a pasteboard. But—if it’s disappearing on your document, make sure you have “normal view” on, and not “preview,” “bleed,” or “slug.”

If the designer did increase the slug area, you can change that by doing to document set up. Check under the “bleed and slug” options.

If you want a smaller pasteboard, you can go to the preferences and adjust the horizontal pasteboard measurement (under Guides and Pasteboard).
