Too late to edit: But–the text wrap works in conjunction with whatever your leading is. So it will push it down an entire line. The only way to get space evenly above and below is to adjust the space amounts in the text wrap.

in reply to: Text wrap causing text to jump #82624

I’m not sure why it jumps down an entire line–it does that to me as well sometimes. Sometimes I have to use a negative number in the text wrap below to move an object down.

in reply to: Text wrap causing text to jump #82620

Well, if it’s in the middle of text, it will only adjust below when you change the depth of the object. When it’s at the top of a page, the wrap above is basically cancelled out and can only adjust below. When the middle of the page, the wrap above is set and doesn’t adjust unless you pull the box up.

When in the middle of pages, I think you’re just going to have to adjust the wrap above/below manually to get even spacing.

I’ve also found that I have to have less space below than above in my wraps. That’s because the wrap below measures to the ascenders and not x height of the type. So if I have 1 pica above, I usually have 9 points below to compensate for the ascender.

I don’t think so. I checked the Preflight settings and I don’t see anything for that.

in reply to: Importing InCopy Files #82586

    Thanks, AM.

I’ve played around with it a little bit. I should be getting the job next week. And yes, I will have to import the file and I will definitely be checking out the stories first to page it, and then when saving, check in the links (or whatever it’s called).

It looks like once I get first pass pages done, I will be returning the ID file to them (as well as an exported InCopy file). And they will supposedly do 2nd pass corrections and stuff. Of course, they may send it back to us to repage, so their incopy file will be sent to me at that time again.

This whole thing is going to be a nightmare, I think. Some of their editors don’t work at the publisher’s place of business and may work at home. And the publishers are in NYC, and I’m in Syracuse. So keeping the linked stories on one server is pretty much impossible.

This is something new they are doing, and I have no idea where they got the idea from. I guess I understand how they want to do things electronically instead of writing down their corrections on the actual page proofs, but I think it’s a disaster waiting to happen.

For example, let’s say they take my exported first pass InCopy file. They do their corrections and send it back to me. I then update my ID file so I can repage–but I have no idea what changes were made. ID won’t highlight any changes they made, so for all I know they could have made a correction on page two, which caused a bad line break. Or inserted a paragraph somewhere which caused reflow, and I will have to go through the entire document to see where it was inserted. Or deleted. Or they type in new ellipses (three dots). In the first pass they will have thin-spaces between the periods, but if they type it in InCopy, it won’t be. Same thing with italic versus character styles.

I and the proof room will basically have to check each and every page 2nd pass. If we had hard-copy to see the corrections it wouldn’t be an issue. But there will be no hard copy.

Can you imagine the nightmare I and the company I work for will be facing?

    I shudder thinking about it.

But the publisher is going through some company who streamlines things and they must think it’s the way to go. I hate companies like that–they don’t use common sense.

Reminds me of a company years ago who advised us that we should page jobs in Word Perfect because that was the way of the future…

in reply to: Importing InCopy Files #82436

Replying to myself. It seems I don’t need InCopy so long as they are supplying the files, and I should be able to import okay.

But–are there certain things I should watch out for or be aware of?

Or is it basically importing like I would a graphic (but it’s text instead).

Why the need to spam us with that company.

And two thousand dollars for that power session.

    I don’t think so.

in reply to: Cancel stylistic set by find & change #82333

My first guess is that you just can’t remove it on certain words. I think you will have to create a character style with that stylistic set turned off and replace the words with that new character style.

in reply to: Text tool no work after MOVE PAGES #81869

It sounds like you have blank text boxes on top of the moved ones. And that you may have relinked to those blank ones. On the moved pages, move the text frame off to the side. It’s possible they will be the empty ones and you can delete them. Then you will have to relink to the “moved” pages again.

That’s what I usually do too, David.

in reply to: Advice: InDesign to EBook: Stylesheets #81814

Thanks for your reply, Mike. I also don’t understand why they want these things. And you’re right–it would be a total nightmare and would cause a lot of extra time to turn off the keep options. I’m hoping we can just uncheck those things when the book is all done and they go to archive it. But sometimes they start the eBooks in the early stages.

Thanks for that grep-based script for the cap problem. I will play with it. Hopefully I can find something more user friendly as a lot of folks in the shop aren’t GREP-knowledgeable.

I appreciate your explanation of everything, and I will share with my bosses.

    Thanks again

in reply to: Using paragraph rules in a creative way, perhaps? #81732

The only thing I can think of (though I don’t have time to try it at the time) is to use custom underline and custom strikethroughs for the rules above and below. You’d have to play around with the offsets. I’d guess you’d have to nest them in your headers. Then use the paragraph rules above and below with the “paper.” Or do vice versa and use the custom underline and strikethroughs as the “paper.”

That just the first thing that popped into my head.

It is kinda funny. I’m surprised he/she returned to the thread and posted again.

Your post is full of mistakes, and you want folks to have you write things for them?

in reply to: Shortcut: end nested style character #80342

    I hope the following helps:

With InDesign open (no need for a document to be open):

    1) if you don’t already have one, create a new set of keyboard shortcuts.

    2) Go to the menu bar and go to edit. Scroll down and select keyboard shortcuts

    3) It’s self-explanatory how to set one up and save.

    4) after saving, you want to edit the keyboard shortcuts.

    5) In the product area, choose “Type Menu” from the menu.

    6) Scroll down to “Insert Special Character: Other: End Nested Style Here”

    7) Select that, and in the bottom there will be a box called “New Shortcut”

    8) Put your shortcut there. I use Control + E.

    9) Assign it.

    10) Save.
