MemberKai–many times topics here can go days without an answer or a reply. I don’t think Malcolm returning 24 hours later means he isn’t interested.

MemberI’m glad you figured out a work around.
When I have something similar, I create a second running head style and use that for the chapter numbers.
Dwayne Harris
MemberI admit I’ve never used the chapter number variable. But can you explain more of what you are trying to accomplish.
Do you want the numbering on the actual chapter opening page or the chapter number to appear on text pages in that small box?
When I have chapter numbers, I have them in place normally.
If the text pages require them in the corners of the text pages, I create a new running head variable and do it that way.
I never use the chapter number variable.

MemberAre you sure you’re opening the newer file?
I only ask because several times a gal at work has has done a “save as” on the file and saved it to the wrong folder.

MemberSorry. I have no advice as I’m a “tower” man, though at work I’m on an iMac. I know nothing about laptops.
But since you said you can’t use desktops anymore, is it because of you don’t have the room for it? If so, the mini-macs are a pretty good deal (though you have to buy your own monitor–which are cheap nowadays.

MemberThat is odd. Just out of curiosity–do you have layout adjustment turned on or off? It’s under “Layout” then you scroll down to Liquid Layout. I always have it turned on.
If you want to email me the file (you can delete the text if you’re not allowed to share it) I will look at it for you. I may not be able to do until tomorrow night or Saturday morning though. Or just send me the file with a few blank pages.
You can email me at dwayne.harris (at) gmail.com
I have all versions of Indesign (CS6 through 2017). I’m on a Mac.

MemberI’ve found that any objects on the master page have to be one point away from the inside gutter. Just turning off the inside bleed won’t do it–especially for things like that last page.

MemberI’ve never seen a warning box like that. And who is Marijan?
Are you using some sort of layers plug-in?

MemberI’ve had that happen, and the object didn’t extend onto the facing master. But they touched the page edge.
But–I think it had to be with the inside bleed. If I made sure the objects were a point away from the inside edge, then everything was okay. But if it touched the inside page edge, I’d have the problem.

MemberControl it in what way?
I don’t think the title says it all.

MemberAnn–one of my first thoughts was discretionary hyphens or non-breaking, but I think they look different and not like regular hyphens (at least the discretionary hyphens look different). But that’s in the current versions of Word.
I’m glad you got it figured out.

MemberThat’s weird that you can’t even search for the hyphens in Word.
I’ve had that happen a few times, and it was because the author/typist used a different font (usually Symbol) for the hyphens. Why, I had no idea, but that’s what it was.

MemberI’d say the first example you showed (indented). That’s how we do it where I work.
