David BlatnerKeymasterI think the Data Merge idea is a good one. However, maybe it is more work than you need.
There are ways to link to a Word document, so if you edit the Word document you can update it in InDesign. But you have to be extremely careful with your paragraph styles.
Another option is to use a third-party tool such as WordsFlow or DocsFlow from emsoftware.com
David BlatnerKeymasterThis sounds like something just might be messed up with the Word doc, or the import.
1. That is very odd. My suggestion is to do a Save As from the Word doc… maybe choose .docx instead of .doc (or vice versa)
2. It’s possible that the paragraph style is applying, but that you have local formatting, or a character style overriding it. Check for that.
David BlatnerKeymasterYou can rename them in the Bookmarks panel. There may be a way to rename them with a custom script, but I don’t know of any, sorry!

David BlatnerKeymasterThere was a discussion about a script on this here:

The PowerStyles feature in DTP Cloud (was “Blatner Tools”) may also be able to help:

David BlatnerKeymasterYou can see bookmarks more easily if you select the story and choose Edit > Edit in Story Editor.
I’m not sure why Word would be putting all those bookmarks in there. You may be able to find a way to remove them in Word before importing.
If you want to delete the bookmarks, you should be able to do that in the panel easily.
More on bookmarks here..

David BlatnerKeymasterIt’s hard to say… you might try exporting as IDML and opening that IDML file to see if it clears out any garbage. Maybe check to make sure the objects on the master pages aren’t based on other master pages, or set to locked (so you can’t select them to delete them).

David BlatnerKeymasterSo glad that worked for you, Katherine.
I’m sure the script to be modified to do that, but I’m not a good enough scripter to do it. But another way you can do this is by searching for all the space characters at the beginning of a paragraph with Find/Change and then removing the strikethrough.
For example, open Find/Change and click the GREP tab. Search for^+(that means “all the spaces at the beginning of every paragraph, whether it’s a space or a tab or whatever)
Leave the Change to Blank. But click in the Change Format section, then click the Strikethrough area and set the checkbox to off (blank).
When you Change All, it will remove the strikethrough formatting from the spaces at the beginning of paragraphs.
David BlatnerKeymasterWait… is this a data merge document, or an XML document? You normally don’t use both… they’re different features.
David BlatnerKeymasterNo, I don’t think InCopy has the Import PDF feature:

David BlatnerKeymasterI agree that there are some confusing questions and several that I wanted to reply “well, it depends.” But I’m not sure what you mean by reducing users to the tools? Can you explain?
