There is something weird happening here, for sure. I don’t know if it’s new or if it’s been in ID for a long time, but yeah: When I paste a vector path from AI to ID, it comes over with some local formatting. That’s pretty annoying.

When I do it, it doesn’t have text wrap, but I’m getting some other formatting (such as Frame Fitting Options.

Yes, clicking “clear overrides” clears it up.

Oh, yes, I have seen OMA fail at larger values. But for what you’re using, I’d think you could keep the values down around 14 or 17 and it should work! Unless the quote marks are really huge.

But I’m glad you have something that is kind of working for you.

Hm. That’s odd that optical margin alignment (OMA) isn’t working when you change the font with a grep style. It does work for me. I’m applying a different font with the expression ['"]
As you said, different fonts require a different value in the Story panel. In general, I have to raise the value a bit, but I can usually find a value where the quotes fall outside the margin pretty well.

That said, I wonder if some variation on this (crazy) workaround we came up with some years ago would work:

Turning Off Hanging Punctuation for Quotes in Middle of a Paragraph

Glad you figured it out! Oh wait… are you talking about the crosshairs when you’re placing an image and you start dragging? I only see crosshairs after I start dragging. (And it works with GPU and CPU.) Or are you seeing crosshairs some other time?

However, you don’t need crosshairs to snap to a guide. You should just need to get close to it and it’ll work. Look for the tiny black arrow in the Place cursor to turn white — that means it’s snapping to a guide or a smart guide. And you can, of course, use Snap to Guides in the View menu.

Thank you very much, Michel! You are a great Jedi.
Remember that you can put code or pre html tags around the text and it will keep the quote marks straight.

So the text will "look like this"

Hi Aaron! Nice to hear from you. As you know, I’m not much of a scripter myself… we’ll see if anyone shows up here who is, and can help. In the meantime, if you’re on FB, I highly recommend asking this group:

Cecil?! Is that YOU?! Chirp! Sadly, I didn’t walk through the gates until the autumn of ’84.

I did try duplicating the character style approach. When I set it to “Remove Styles” in Import Options, the character style (and paragraph style) is stripped away and I’m left with local formatting… which looks the same (that is, I get the dreaded pink highlighting that this font doesn’t exist)

OK, wow, this is pretty strange. I just tested this myself and got something similar but even more weird than you.

I made a Word doc with this text:
This is a test of some téxt in Word that I will be ímporting into InDesign.

(So the e and the i have accents… I hope those are retained here on this forum.)

When I import into ID, the “téxt” works properly, but the second word comes in as a missing font! The whole word is set to: [Times New Roman (Body CS)]
That is really weird because the font is set to Georgia in InDesign! So where does that Times New Roman come from… and why “Body CS”?

My theory is that some accents are not natively encoded in the font (like the lower case i with an accent) and Word saves it with some crazy font substitute.

However, when I apply the Emphasis character style in Word and try that, it still does not work. I’m not sure why it is working for you.

As for screen shots… unfortunately we have no way to upload images here, but you can put them in a shared folder (such as dropbox or Imgur and share the link here.

Interesting. I’m not sure the best way to do this. I think these two articles are doing the opposite of what you want, but perhaps there are some hints that would help:

How to Split Up a Single Page Into a Multipage Spread

Breaking up pages with the Page Tool.

Just to clarify Steve’s point: If you export a PDF of a facing pages document, you have an option for “Spreads” in the export PDF dialog box. When you do that, the two pages of a spread are treated as a single page.
