November 12, 2010 at 7:30 am in reply to: CS4 to CS5 change in layer order of anchored objects? #57705
David BlatnerKeymasterThat sound odd. So these are all text frames, anchored into one another?
If I anchor redframe into yellowframe, and yellowframe into blueframe (in cs5), then I can see all of them. It sounds as though you're saying that redframe disappears behind yellowframe for you?
David BlatnerKeymasterWell, PDF/X1-a is based on Acrobat 4, not 5. Huge difference: transparency is not flattened in acr4. So if there was any transparency on those pages, your printer probably didn't like it.
November 11, 2010 at 3:08 pm in reply to: How to get the Acrobat form wizard to recognize InDesign text NOT in a box? #57698
David BlatnerKeymasterA lot of people find they need to create a form one way for Acrobat to process it, and a different way for how a human should see it. That's why this Replace Pages tip is so good:
David BlatnerKeymasterActually, I think the blog post I wrote (which you linked to in your first reply, Theun) would work just fine. But instead of using “^7″ for a paragraph symbol, they would just have to use “option/alt-7″ to type in a real paragraph marker symbol. No? Why use codes when you can type the real character you want?
Or, just use a different character to indicate superscript, such as a bullet or pretty much any other character you're not ordinarilly going to use.
David BlatnerKeymasterInteresting. Strange. Thank you for letting me know. Something appears to be messed up there… we'll see if we can fix it.
David BlatnerKeymasterIf your Separations Preview panel just showed Black and Yellow, I think there's something wrong with the panel, not the document. The panel always shows a minimum of CMYK plus C, M, Y, and K (five entries).
David BlatnerKeymasterBMP?! Well, there's your problem! That's a low-res, cruddy format.
And if you want text and arrows, wouldn't you want them crisp?
So place in Illustrator, add the arrows and text, then save as PDF or AI and just bring that in to InDesign!
Or better yet, just bring the screen shot into InDesign and add the arrows and text there!
David BlatnerKeymasterI agree that I find it tricky to use a tablet with InDesign. It's wonderful in Photoshop, but I never really got the hang of it in InDesign. Maybe that would change with enough practice.
I use the Logitech Trackball Marble daily and love it. I used to have a much larger trackball that I like more, but wore it out and it had been discontinued. But I certainly can't stand using a mouse (especially with the tiny amount of clear space on my desk).
David BlatnerKeymasterIt's a fun idea, but I'm not sure how you'd do it. Usually people do those “fake 3d books” in Photoshop (often with a plug-in or action). But I bet someone (Mike Rankin, are you listening?!) could come up with a clever solution.
David BlatnerKeymasterSee the information on tables and transparency in this blog post and the great comments after it:
David BlatnerKeymasterWhat kind of ligatures? Usually ligatures such as fi and fl are handled automatically, if the font has them. If you want fancier ligatures, you probably need to make sure you're using an opentype font that has some, and then set the proper ligature settings in the paragraph styles.
David BlatnerKeymasterI'm using Safari in Mac OS.
Thanks for the kind words about the podcast!
David BlatnerKeymasterThe hyperlink around the guillotine ad seems to work. Do you have others?
November 1, 2010 at 9:50 am in reply to: how to keep the same resolution of the document while exporting into pdf #57543
David BlatnerKeymasterRight. Acrobat has a display resolution setting in its preferences. I believe by default it's something lik 96 ppi. If you change it to 72 ppi, the 100% should be the same in both Acrobat and InDesign.
David BlatnerKeymasterWill it work if you detach it from the master page? (cmd-shift-click on it, on the document page)
