David BlatnerKeymasterYeah, currently the only way to get video or audio into an epub is to hack the epub file. This is discussed in various places, including https://blog.threepress.org/200…..o-in-epub/
David BlatnerKeymasterThat is correct: There are MANY things that can play in Acrobat that do not work in Apple's (unfortunate) version of the PDF reader. In general, if you can see it in the Mac OS Preview application, then the iPad should be able to deal with it. But not always. It's extremely frustrating.

David BlatnerKeymasterYou're probably referring to StoryTweaker from rorohiko:
David BlatnerKeymasterOr open the source document and the target document and (in the source doc) choose Layout > Pages > Move Pages. Then tell ID where you want to put the pages.
David BlatnerKeymasterNo, I don't think so.
It would be better to use normal right-aligned tab stops.

David BlatnerKeymasterMP3 files can be imported into InDesign CS5 and exported to PDF (Interactive PDF) or SWF.
But you cannot link to a youtube movie because there is no object… no actual URL to point to. At least none that I know of. Youtube points to an HTML page, which then points to a movie, but not in a way that you can grab the flv.
David BlatnerKeymasterWhen you copy and paste, are you selecting the text inside the cell, or selecting the cell itself (to copy/paste more than one cell from Excel)?
David BlatnerKeymasterCopy and paste almost never works with non-English text. Using File > Place can work in some situations, though you'll need to set the font correctly after it gets into InDesign.
There is a good article by Diane Burns in InDesign Magazine from a year or two ago about Asian text in InDesign. Might check the back issues.

David BlatnerKeymasterGlad we could be of help!
Yeah, I have had so many problems with Preview. It's good, but not great. Acrobat is definitely the way to go. (It's like the old days with “PostScript clones” from various companies. Things just sometimes didn't print properly. Better to use the “real Adobe” technology if you want to ensure it comes out right.)
David BlatnerKeymasterDoes your client want the PDF automatically named? Or they do want the “naming” dialog box to appear?

David BlatnerKeymasterIn general, you should try to put text ABOVE transparent objects if you're going to be exporting to pdf/x-1a or x-3, because both of those are based on Acrobat 4, which means it has to get “flattened.” Text under transparency will be converted to outlines, and sometimes not as well as you'd hope. Do a search for “transparency flattening” and you'll learn loads.
If you use Acrobat 5 or later, the transparency will be maintained. But it sounds as though you're not seeing them in the final PDF. Are you viewing them in Acrobat or some other PDF viewer? Are you using any spot colors? If so, you'll probably need to turn on Simulate Overprint in Acrobat in order to see them on screen.

David BlatnerKeymasterThanks for your correction, Theun. You are correct. Drat. :)
November 29, 2010 at 4:23 pm in reply to: Best practices for creating hyperlinks in InDesignCS5/AcrobatPro 9.0 #57949
David BlatnerKeymasterI think you can do all that in InDesign. I would suggest doing it as a single document if you can, as opposed to a book. X-refs and links and tocs are having some weird problems in CS5 when docs are split up in a book panel.
Take a look at the InDesign CS4 Beyond the Basics title at lynda.com for how to do long-doc features in InDesign, such as cross-references, table of contents, links, and so on. (We haven't updated that for CS5 at this time, but it's mostly the same from cs4 and cs5.)

David BlatnerKeymasterOne idea comes to mind: InDesign won't make text italic if there is no such thing as an italic in that typeface. Perhaps the font you are using in some places does not have an italic?
One idea is to use jpannier's idea of find/change styles in Word instead of InDesign. That is, search for all text that has the Italic formatting applied to it and apply a true italic character style (you have to make the character style in Word first, of course). Then ID should import the character style. If the font doesn't have an italic face, it will show up as pink highlighting in InDesign — but the character style should be applied anyway!
David BlatnerKeymasterThat is one of the oddest things I've heard in a long time.
That sounds like a system problem, not an InDesign problem! Are you sure it doesn't happen in any other programs?
