David BlatnerKeymasterI would say that these are bugs in InDesign, and Adobe should address them.
However, ultimately, I guess I should say that I find Alternate Layouts to be “half-baked” in a number of ways, and I rarely use it myself. Just too many problems with it right now.
David BlatnerKeymasterMaybe the file is locked? Or it’s saved as an indt (indesign template) file?
When you open it, does it show up as “[Converted]” in the title bar?
David BlatnerKeymasterre: screen shot: You’d have to put it on flickr or image shack or someplace and link to it here; sorry.
But if the duplicate works, then maybe delete the original and use the duplicate? Maybe it’s just some kind of corruption?
David BlatnerKeymasterWhat kind of image did you put in there? Is there any chance you placed a movie file by accident?!
David BlatnerKeymasterThat is very odd. Are you opening the PDF in acrobat or reader or OS Preview or something else?
David BlatnerKeymasterWow, that’s interesting. I haven’t tested that but it kind of makes sense. It’s important to remember that alternate layouts are not really anything magic… they are literally just a different section in your document. Pages inside the document. So I wonder if the links aren’t working because it’s confused as to where to link to.
Another thought: When you make the alternate layout, it probably made a duplicate of each text anchor with a slightly different name. For example, I just tried it: I added a text anchor called “Anchor” and the made an alternate layout, and checked Hyperlink Destination Options (in hyperlinks panel menu) and there were two anchors… “Anchor” and “Anchor 2”
David BlatnerKeymasterHm. It would be pretty hard to do that as a single paragraph. Why does it need to be one paragraph?
I guess you’d need to use Shift-Return to add line breaks in the middle of the paragraph, and after each bulleted line.
David BlatnerKeymasterI’m not sure what the difficult is. Is this 5 different paragraphs?
The first paragraph would use a nested style, applying a character style to the first 3 words. The bullet paragraphs should be just bulletted paragraphs…
David BlatnerKeymasterActually, InDesign has never had this feature. If you were doing it in CS3, it must have been with some other trick… for example, using the multiply blend mode, or using a feather effect.
David BlatnerKeymasterI don’t know about that script, and cannot look at it today, but there are many ways to make numbered tickets, such as:

David BlatnerKeymasterI would use the FindChangeByList script that comes with InDesign.

or
https://creativepro.com/a-major-job-gets-easier-with-grep-and-findchangebylist.phpOr use MultiFindChange:

David BlatnerKeymasterThere are many plug-ins from companies that can help with database publishing. For example:
* DataLinker from Teacup Software
* InData and InCatalog from Em Software
* DataLinker from Teacup Software
* AutoPrice from Meadows Software
* EasyCatalog from 65bit SoftwareNone of these require scripting, fortunately!
David BlatnerKeymasterData Merge is very basic, so it does not have features like that. Some third-party plug-ins give you many more options. For example, InData from emsoftware.com is very good at merging with if/then and other commands.

David BlatnerKeymasterIt’s certainly not as easy as Word! :)
Here’s how to do it with numbered lists:

David BlatnerKeymasterIf you are trying to apply the character style from the beginning of the paragraph up to (or including) the colon, I would suggest using a nested style rather than a grep style. (Nested styles are much easier anyway.)
