David BlatnerKeymasterAre you saying that sometimes the document is created in inches and sometimes in points? That would be very odd.
If you change it while no docs are open, it should stick. Though if you open a template or an old document, it won’t have changed. Changing the prefs only changes the defaults for new documents you create.
If you choose the Web intent in the new doc dialog box, the measurements will be changes to Pixels, however.
David BlatnerKeymasterAre these images actually inline? That is, are they anchored in the text frame? Or are they just floating on the page somewhere? If fig 1 and 2 are anchored, and then you just put a new fig 2 on the page (non-anchored), then I can see how it might mess up the numbering. But if the new fig is actually anchored in the text flow between 1 and 2, it absolutely should update the numbers properly.
If the objects aren’t anchored, and you have more than one numbered fig on the same page, then I think the numbering gets based on the order in which the objects were created (not where they are on the page). Kind of crazy. One workaround: cutting and pasting the objects re-numbers them.
David BlatnerKeymasterThere are various ways to do this, but it usually comes down to paragraph numbering with the List feature:

David BlatnerKeymasterYou might try the Smallest File Size adobe pdf preset. But if you do, you might consider changing the JPEG Compression to Medium so that the image quality is not too bad.
David BlatnerKeymasterAh, Jongware, I see… maybe I misunderstood what this person is asking for.
@puurprint: What do you mean by “page numbers as text”? Can you give an example?
David BlatnerKeymasterActually, I have to ask: Why would you want them alphabetical? The order of the layers determines the stacking order (or z-order) of the objects on the page. So it’s extremely rare to want them in alphabetical order. I usually have “text” over “graphics” and “background” at the bottom…
David BlatnerKeymasterThis is why the cross-references feature is so helpful! But of course if you have not used the cross-references feature, then you will have to adjust it manually, or with this script:

David BlatnerKeymasterI don’t think you can do this automatically, but you can drag layers up and down of course.
There are also plug-ins that help you manage your layers, such as: https://www.dtptools.com/product.asp?id=lgid

David BlatnerKeymasterWell, if they’re quick-and-cheap, then pdf/x1-a might be better anyway. Maybe if I were a printer I would have more sympathy for them, but in general I find the request to convert to outlines pretty pathetic. Especially if they can accept pdf/x-4.
I agree that using Type > Convert to Outlines is very dangerous and should be avoided.
For those reading this who don’t know what Franky is talking about, this is the blog post:

David BlatnerKeymasterYou are absolutely right: You cannot outline fonts as part of the transparency flattening process if you’re creating PDF/X-4.
However, I’m curious: Why would you want to? Any printer who accepts PDF/x4 is probably sufficiently advanced and knowledgeable that they wouldn’t need outlined fonts.
David BlatnerKeymasterInDesign template files are just like regular InDesign files, so you can put them anywhere you want. When you want to open one, you just navigate to it and open it, or find it in the folder and double-click on it. Nothing special required! :)

David BlatnerKeymasterThe more I read, the more of a mystery this is to me. The IDML trick certainly should have cleaned out any kind of weirdness that snuck in. And opening an IDML file is literally the same as re-creating the document by hand, as far as I know.
Is there, by any chance, a character style applied to the text as well? Or does the character style panel say the text has None?
As for going back… I guess my real suggestion isn’t that people shouldn’t edit Basic — it’s that people shouldn’t be using Basic. Just make your own styles.
David BlatnerKeymasterYou would probably need to use non-breaking spaces or use the No Break character formatting. You can change the type of space between the index entry and the number for example (that is one of the options when you are creating an index).

David BlatnerKeymasterI strongly recommend never editing the Basic paragraph style:

David BlatnerKeymasterGreat point, Justin! Yes, there are many clunky things about books and book panels. Here’s another thing that always bugs me: I like saving versions of my documents. So I’ll open, say, “Chapter 3.indd” from the book panel and then do a Save As, naming it “Chapter 3_v2.indd”. But of course, the new version is no longer part of the book and it needs to be relinked!
