David BlatnerKeymasterOkay, check it out:
https://creativepro.com/setting-dash-stroke-exact-gap-dash-values-indesign.phpWhew!
David BlatnerKeymasterOMG, I’m embarrassed to admit that I had completely forgotten about that Dashed feature in InDesign! As Anne-Marie said to me recently, I have forgotten more about InDesign than a lot of people ever learn, but it’s still frustrating when it happens.
Yes, when you choose Dashed at the bottom of the Stroke Type pop-up menu, THEN you get the dash and gaps feature.
However, as you discovered, I don’t think Object Styles are set up to record those gaps and dashes. Oops! Probably a bug or oversight on Adobe’s part. However, to be honest, given that I didn’t even remember that this feature existed, are there really that many people using it? Hm.
Fortunately, there is a solution. I’ll write it up in a blog post now… hold on…
David BlatnerKeymasterSorry to note that it’s not here yet! Drat.
David BlatnerKeymasterI’m pretty tired… end of day here… but what am I missing? There are no options in InDesign for specifying a dash length and gap length. Can you post an image somewhere (such as image shack) and put a link here so I can see it? Or email me at david at indesignsecrets.
David BlatnerKeymasterWhere are you setting the dashes to 1 pt and gaps of 1.5 pt? That sounds like Illustrator, not InDesign. In InDesign, you can set those kinds of things by creating a custom Stroke Style in the Stokes panel menu.
David BlatnerKeymasterNote that this PDF is 51 MB! Too big for me to download easily while on the road.
It’s always hard to answer the question of how we compare to others. Did that 7 weeks include design? And writing? and Production of it in InDesign? Each of those are very different problems.
David BlatnerKeymasterThe values all depend on the design of the book. There is no correct answer. I suggest finding a book designer who can help design the book with you.
David BlatnerKeymasterI don’t think so. Perhaps a permissions problem on your computer; or maybe you’re not quitting InDesign properly. (InDesign only remembers its preferences when you quit fully.) Strange! Try rebuilding preferences, too.
David BlatnerKeymasterOkay, just a couple other ideas:
- That “wheel” thing seems very weird. Try to repair permssions on your machine: https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1452
- Make sure you have the most recent version of CS6 (choose Help > Updates)
Something is obviously very wrong.
Yes, you can run both CC and CS6 at the same time on the same machine. Yes, you can open CS6 files in CC (not vice versa, unless you export to IDML). But I’m not convinced that CC will help here. It might, but something has gone wrong on your computer somewhere, very deep.
David BlatnerKeymasterWow, that is really bad. I’m sorry to hear it. A few ideas:
- Try creating a new user account on your computer. Then log out and log in under that account. See if InDesign works properly under the new account. If so, then it’s probably something to do with your system.
- Make sure you’re not running any extra plug-ins. Like if you installed CS3 plug-ins into CC, that could be trouble.
- The fact that you’re getting these database errors makes me wonder about the files you’re using. So be sure to try working with new files first.
David BlatnerKeymasterYes, it sounds like you’ll likely need to change the format manually, unless there is some clever way to identify the two kinds of paragraphs.
For example, I once worked on a project where we put one special character (like an asterisk) at the beginning of certain lines. Then we did a find/change to apply a paragraph style to any paragraph that had an asterisk at the beginning, and then another to remove the asterisk. This took some set-up in advance, in the spreadsheet, but in general it’s often faster and more efficient to set up the original data like this first.
David BlatnerKeymasterNot sure what you mean by the first two lines changing. Why will it change? What’s different?
As for the splitting up of pages, check out this:

(though naming the files is going to be tricky; maybe a script)
David BlatnerKeymasterI wrote this on a blog post comment, too, but:
It could be that the buttons are covered up by other interactive objects. Or perhaps the stacking order problem listed here: https://creativepro.com/stacking-order-bug-exporting-interactive-pdf.php or
You’re using Acrobat on the Mac or Windows, right? iOS still has problems with buttons.

David BlatnerKeymasterOdd… no, anchored objects definitely should take no space at all.
Oh, but an inline object could take up some space! Check anchored object options to make sure it’s set to Custom (not inline). Or, if you’re trying to put it between paragraphs, perhaps use an Above Line instead.
David BlatnerKeymasterHere is another example of needing to change space before/after conditionally, depending on where it is… in this case, inside a Table of Contents!
