    “Yes, my question is that by extending my artwork to the bleed edge then I will be losing a part of the artwork, so the artwork is essential so by doing this I am losing something essential to the trim.”

    This is where you have to become a designer and solve the problem.

    Sounds like you have crucial artwork that’s close to the edge of your image. One option is adding non-crucial background art to your image through Photoshop, etc. Another is by not having bleed at all.

    Try changing the Number Position to Center or Right (in Paragraph Styles).

    We need more information, like a screen shot with the problem/error. Make sure all your fonts are active. Type>Find Font.

    I’m sure someone will have a better idea, but here is one way to deal with a job like this:

    1. Place the Excel file as a table.
    2. If the categories line up in columns correctly, apply your Paragraph Styles to each column.
    3. If you need the text to flow to the next page, you can use Keep Options on the first style, Start Paragraph -> Next Page
    4. Table -> Convert Table to Text (Paragraph/Paragraph) – now your text should have the Paragraph Styles applied and there will be a return if there is no information. You can do Find/Replace Multiple Returns if you want to clean those up.

    Window->Text Wrap

    Window->Styles->Object Styles

    Make sure the default Object Style is what you want (no text wrap, etc.)

    That panel is helpful for setting up the different types of frames you want in a document.

    Maybe the frame is anchored?

    The classic graphic design solution to this problem is: don’t put text over that photo.

    Otherwise, try Charlotte’s idea, or try variations on Effects->Drop Shadow or Outer Glow. I often use that with 0 xy and play with the settings until it’s subtle enough to get by an art director.

    In the olden days, we used to decrease the contrast/adjust levels in that area of the photo to help set off the text.

    You may need to post a screenshot for us to understand.

    Object-> Text Frame Options -> Vertical Justification is it set to Top, Center, Justify or Bottom?

    I also always check to see if there are non-breaking characters. Select All -> Window -> Type -> Character -> (hamburger flyout menu) -> No Break (should have no check next to it)

    Johanna, I don’t know how to do that automatically, but I found these links that may help.

    in reply to: Flattening Transparent Frames #92229

    re: First, if you have 100% cyan and you set it to a 20% tint it will be exactly the same color as a 100% cyan set to a 20% Opacity. <— this is true for process builds, but not necessarily for JPG export. Often I don’t control the final output—it goes onto multiple vendors for print and web. Some will export from InDesign directly to JPG, where the RGB conversions aren’t equal. (as my image shows)

    While we’re at it – I often see two frames stacked, 100% type on top and one below with 20% transparency, when that could have been done with one text frame and a build. Ah, well! I’ll keep telling them about this site. :)

    You have no idea the horrors I see!

    I’m cleaning up several complicated booklets that have been used by different designers over the years and I get to deal with them for the next 5 years.

    1. Example: I have a 5×5 frame with a gradient and 85% transparency. Now the client wants me to place art behind it, but doesn’t want it to show through the gradient frame. If I try to replicate the gradient with screens…the results are hard to match. Maybe you have a better idea to deal with this.

    2. Color consistency. 20% transparent Cyan and 20% screen of Cyan don’t always render the same (see JPG), so I am cleaning up documents that use both methods to define the same build in artwork that doesn’t need to be transparent. There’s only so much color management I can control, so the best I can do is maintain consistent CMYK builds. If artwork isn’t meant to be transparent and things get moved around/behind it, that can be a major problem.

    in reply to: Shutterstock? Dreamstime? #92106

    I’m in a print shop and we use Shutterstock on a subscription basis. It’s great for dealing with a wide variety of clients; we get 25 images a day, and the quality is always very good. May be too much for your project. It’s worth image googling and seeing which stock sites have the kind of images you want. Another site if you are looking for region-specific images: https://www.designpics.com

    What David said, plus:

    This is by no means perfect, but: you can link via script to a Word document (that updates when you change the Word doc)

    • Linking to Word Documents:
    https://creativepro.com/import-word-documents-edit-in-word-and-indesign-and-keep-linked-for-updating.php

    • Or link to a separate InDesign file or PDF (if you plan to keep the frame size the same)

    Disclaimer: my suggestions are sometimes wily, not always the best! Good luck.

    in reply to: The Image is darken when Printing !! #91520

    (Short answer) Adjust your images based on what is printed, not what it looks like on the screen. Always keep a copy of the original image in case you have to go back!
