I’m actually pasting table data from Excel files into the tables. So, the data is not linked.
It seems InDesign’s implementation of table styles is just buggy.
Thanks for the idea. I also sometimes will paste into a plain text document to remove styling. I hadn’t thought to do that with this though.

I did check Paragraph styles. Forcing it to “Basic paragraph” does not remove the gray blocks.
I hope someone can figure this out. It is really frustrating!
