it USES a script but it's not a simple turnkey solution, but it works. follow the tutorial on my blog:

    https://colecandoo.wordpress.co…..be-single/

in reply to: Make all headline sizes Fit to Frame #61900

I think I have a solution which will help. the full tutorial is available at https://colecandoo.wordpress.co…..und-holes/

The solution doesn't require scripting at all, but instead relies on GREP styles.

in reply to: Script to label selection with height and width #61480

    @Jongware

for once I actually know the answer to a scripting question!!!!

had the same error on my mac @ work (10.5.8 running cs5.5). Go to line 31 of the script and change the

    appliedFont:”HelveticatRegular”

to a font which is definitely on the other user's system.

on my mac, there was no Helvetica Regular, instead just used ArialtRegular.

    after that, the script worked.

in reply to: How to start making a booklet in InDesign 5.5 #61381

there is a difference between an indesign file type of BOOK and the dialog PRINT BOOKLET. the PRINT BOOKLET feature is used to print (to a desktop printer usually) artwork which will be bound in a saddle-stitched manner.

However, indesign's BOOK feature is a way of combining many indesign files together without putting them into the same file. can be used to make books, but the binding of the book is not necessarily saddle stitched, could be burst bound, wiro, case bound etc.

so i understand the OP's confusion.

in reply to: How to start making a booklet in InDesign 5.5 #61358

What is the OP's experience in using InDesign? To me this doesn't seem so complicated UNTIL the print booklet bit, so I'll give the run-down until then.

first, i'd set up a 16pp document 120mm high x 175mm high with facing pages AND master text frame turned on and set appropriate margins (this is up to the OP).

from here, either type or go to the file menu and go place to get a dialog box to place the text (from a word document) into the indesign file.

once the booklet has been made, it is using the “print booklet” bit that is a bit tougher. indesign CS5.5 has a print booklet feature and it involves some trial and error using the dialog boxes to get it right, but there is a preview which gives some idea if things are going in the right direction. BUT this will print direct to a printer – it isn't possible using Lion to use the print booklet feature to make a PDF (AFAIK).

one question for the OP though, is the OP printing the art on their own equipment, or sending it to a third party to be printed? if the latter is the case, it is not normally necessary to prepare imposed artwork for commercial printers – imposition is THEIR job as only they will know how they will want the artwork imposed. I say this having been a prepress operator for the last 15 years.

in reply to: Script to change the language of all text on document #61357

    @Eric:

Jongware's script is javascript, not java, nor applescript.

go back to Jongware's post and hit the “select code” button. copy this text to your clipboard.

next, open textedit on your mac (or textwrangler if you have it) and paste the text into a new text file.

from here, save the file with whatever name you like, SO LONG AS the suffix is “jsx”.

then, put this into your scripts panel folder of indesign like the indesignsecrets.com page suggests.

in reply to: Printer Proofs have blurs around text #61248

if the printer's RIPped proof is produced from a RIP such as AGFA printdrive, then the reason that there are blurs is that the RIP has created rendred files which have the halftone patterns in them. When a rendered proof runs through an inkjet plotter, the halftone pattern can appear deceiving and almost like a moire, so to get around this a slight descreen and blur is put on by the proofing software to remove this pattern and makes the proof look more the printed product… in terms of colour. Yes, a side effect is that sharp vectors become slightly blurred.

If you still have doubts, ask your printer how their RIP generated the proof.

in reply to: Data Merge Questions #61232

Not sure what the OP is trying to do but Data Merge has its place.

I wrote a piece on my own blog which might hopefully answer some of the questions. It is at:

in reply to: removing paragraph character styles #60846

The OP can try to make it frustrating for future users, but scripts like this one:

    indesigning.net/auto-cr…..ter-styles [[link is now broken]]

are just as good as re-assigning styles if they're non-existent.

I sympathise with the OP – we've all had customers which can be frustrating, hopefully they pay their bill. I'd wait until the bill was paid before doing anything else.

Friends come and go, enemies accumulate.

in reply to: Auto import hundreds of images #60845

This will KIND OF do what you want…

    https://www.scriptopedia.org/in…..ToCSV.html

Make a single non-facing page. Run this script. From here, the user will be prompted to navigate to a folder where the pictures reside. Once confirmed and OK'd, the pictures are put into a datamerge database. From here, make a picture frame the size of the page and put the datamerge picture placeholder into that frame. Now create a merged document and voila, one image per page at 100% size.

    hope this helps.

in reply to: (ask) Script for table #60739

have you tried contacting the author of the script, Martin Fischer? his contact is on the page linked from my first post (just above the name of the script).

i can't get the script to fault on my machine but i'm running a mac osx 10.6.8 with indesign cs5, whereas the pic looks like indesign cs4 is running under windows; but regardless martin says the script will run under cs4 and cs3.

i don't speak german but i did say in my original post to use google translate. go to:

    https://translate.google.com.au…..amp;tab=wT

and copy and paste the text into the dialog box which appears – it will do a literal translation. to read an entire site, enter the URL into the google translate and it will translate the entire page.

in reply to: how to grep ID5 #60708

Cari Jansen has some amazing shownotes from a presentation she did: https://www.indesignusergroup.c…..s_GREP.pdf

Michael Murphy (AKA the InDesigner) has a series of shownotes as well which are fab: https://www.indesignusergroup.c…..murphy.pdf

these are about as close as “off-the-shelf” solutions which can be easily customised. Jongware mentions Peter Kahrel's O'reilly book and I agree, for ten bucks it's excellent… i can't even buy lunch for that!

in reply to: (ask) Script for table #60707

    try this site:

    https://indesign.hilfdirselbst……eisen.html

(the site is in german – may need to use google translate)

in reply to: editing press ready PDF #60435

To answer the OP, Jongware is right – indesign is not a PDF editor. the Pitstop software the OP mentions is made by Enfocus called Pitstop Professional (though they make other software too). However, this is an ACROBAT plug-in, not indesign.

In a perfect world, i'd agree too that final art PDFs should not be edited once created… in a perfect world.

Sadly, much of my work is spent using Pitstop whilst in Acrobat to do just that – edit PDFs supplied by clients to edit potential prepress issues. This is purely because artwork was supplied as PDF and the rep/client cannot or will not supply native files, so editing PDFs the only option.
