I don’t disagree with you. But this job is being done on spec, and there’s a limit to how much crafting I’m willing to put into it.

No, same problem. Must be something in the Word document, which was created by my client.

Sorry, that probably should have gone in the General InDesign Topics forum.

It’s something unique to this document. I made up a new ID template with 2 levels of numbered lists and bulleted lists and placed a generic Word document in it. When I exported it to reflowable ePub the problem did not repeat itself. Wish I knew what it was. I like a good mystery.

But I misspoke in my explanation of the problem. There are 6 numbered paragraphs, not 5. The sublist (a-b) appears after paragraph 5 in InDesign, but after paragraph 6, the last numbered paragraph, in the ePub. To test my theory that ID is placing the level 2 list after the last level 1 list paragraph (not where it is in the ID document, after paragraph 5) in the ePub export, I added one more level 1 paragraph (7) consisting of two words. In the export, the level 2 list appears after paragraph 7.

Yes, all one story. Just 11 pages. Very simple document. All frames are threaded properly. No anchors of any kind.

Have you tried using the underline option in the chapter title paragraph style (as opposed to paragraph rules)? It will only underline the text, it won’t extend across the whole column like a paragraph rule would, but it does export to ePub. If you have to insert the line as an image you could position a piece of text (I use 3 asterisks) with its own paragraph style, centered under the title. Then create your line (or use any kind of image, divider, or flourish you want) on the pasteboard, cut it, then in Find/Change search for *** and change it to ^c (contents of the clipboard). It will replace all instances of the 3 asterisks with your line and each line will be anchored in place under the title. If you need to move the line up or down, you can do that by adjusting spacing of the *** paragraph style. Of course you have to go through your book and insert the asterisks, but it’s a lot easier than pasting and anchoring the line one chapter at a time.

Let me tell you how i solved this. I paste the hyperlink in the address bar of a browser. The correct page opens. I copy the link in the adress bar, select the link in the ID document, paste the contents of the clipboard over the top, and the link is now active and can be edited. I can’t see what’s different, but there’s obviously something. I was thinking if there were some typo in the link, wouldn’t i get a file not found error from the browser? Well guess I don’t as long as the problem has gone away.

Thanks for your idea. That would work ok when I generate a PDF for print, but the same document has to be exported to ePub as well, and changing the text color to none does not hide the hidden chapter heading in the ePub export. I could make the text white, but then it would show up if anyone changed the background color on their reader or app from white to black.

Thanks Justin. Good idea for print, but the rules won’t export with the ePub.

    Hi Anne-Marie
Yes the document is set to split based on paragraph style export tags. Looking at the code for each document I see a lot of empty divs at the end of each problem chapter, all of the class “_idGenObjectStyleOverride-1”. Once I deleted all of these the empty pages disappeared. It’s probably something I did to the layout 3 years ago when I was trying to make WordsFlow work (I did something wrong, don’t remember exactly what, and messed things up royally). The strange thing is that it exported without a problem from the earlier version of ID. (FYI “Preserve Local Overrides” is deselected in the export dialog.)

Select one of your images, create a new object style.

Couldn’t you use live text and just group it with the custom background (some sort of image I assume), then anchor the group where it belongs at the head of the chapter?

Thinking more about this, I believe it’s a problem with iBooks, but not one of failing to update an ePub. I did an experiment with a completely different layout and I got the same results in the running header. So it seems that iBooks just will not display small caps with tabular figures.

I’m having this same problem with multiple index page entry ____ is missing errors. The two text editors you mention are for Mac only. I’m trying to do this search and replace with Sigil in Regex mode, but I’m not having any success. The only things it finds are entries with a 9 in them. Can you recommend a text editor for Windows that can perform this search and replace?
