ParticipantThanks, Mike.
I’ve learned with Adobe and a few other VIP (very important apps) that “making so much sense” isn’t always a priority! :-)
I’ll give the alias suggestion a try, as I don’t think it could hurt. Much.
Anticipate a report after testing.Brett Stone
ParticipantIf PDFs are exported as Layered PDFs, the print vendor can more easily make the Marks layer non-printing/”off”, though getting a print vendor to recognize that a file is layered can be tough (because it’s so uncommon.)
I might also clarify: larger, more savvy print vendors with prepress systems probably prefer no marks (but the PDF still contains all Trim Box, Bleed Box, etc.)
Smaller, less savvy printers who ‘just do it the way we’ve always done it’ might freak out if there were no visible crop marks to confirm the artwork is correctly constructed.

ParticipantWhile not an ‘at time of export’ solution, I did learn that running Acrobat fix ‘convert type to outlines’ effectively removes any hinting from the type. By converting, we are left with only the non-hinted vector outline of every glyph.

ParticipantMax,
We’ve been experiencing something similar using the “change fonts csv.jsx” by @kasyan-servetsky.In our case, its not every Type 1 font fighting back, but merely some. While these tend to be font families that we have accumulated several versions and technologies, and often they share an identical Postscript Name, neither of the scripts mentioned thus far rely on postscript naming, and both work similarly in how they utilize the find/replace functions of InDesign to run.
It seems that if we can manually select a font to to find, and then the font to change, the scripts should be successful at doing this much faster, more consistently, and even in locked content.
So the issue appears to be more of how InDesign does what it has to do as a result of the scripts, but not the scripts themselves.
Looking for additional ideas, too!

ParticipantThe Window/View/Split option allows you to see two views of the same document. This can be helpful when you want to work close-up without losing sight of the entire page.
Instead, with two or more layouts open select Window/Arrange followed by the layout you desire. There are options for two-up side by side or stacked, and also some options for a larger view with a few smaller views for other files.
Each window/view created can contain multiple tabs (layouts) which could allow you to the file you are working on one side, and all reference files tabbed and available on the other side.Brett Stone
ParticipantMax, thank you!
It was that easy?? Gee, I think I had tried that, but maybe it was twenty things /like/ that.

ParticipantI’ve been partly successful with the following site, .dmg is downloaded for Mac.

ParticipantThank you, David, for your reply.
Essentially the method you mention is what the client currently does, but since the process is incredibly manual there are numerous opportunities for the name of the layer and the visible slug to become mismatched. For example, a layer slug may be intentionally changed but the layer name itself is not, and now the people who handle the variable data programming that combines layers don’t know which info is correct. Plus, in-house proofreading is time-consuming (often comparing the slug info to the layer name in a layered PDF) for files with 35+ unique variable layers. Eliminating these issues by a fully hands-off solution would be significant at increasing reliability and reducing programming errors.Brett Stone
ParticipantPataka,
I hope this is not a hopeless hope, as I’ve just posted a similar request.
Of course, your post is nearly 7 years old, so I’m hoping that my hope isn’t a hopeless hope. :-)
If you found a solution would you be kind and share?

ParticipantI recently ‘cleaned up’ a Canva image provided by a client for T-shirt design. I did this by using Illustrator’s Trace feature, and for this particular art it worked surprisingly well.
Insult to injury, however, is the printing company (TeeSprings.com, a popular provider for YouTubers and content providers) only accepts raster images for their production process. After multiple conversations with their support, they have no current way to accept vector files for production.Yet in their limited posts regarding production, it appears that THEY then vectorize the image for correct production.
Sigh.Brett Stone
ParticipantYear 1917: Could you post a screen capture of your page with frames and invisibles showing? That will help me and others better see what you are trying to do, and hopefully also show why you aren’t pleased with the current results.
While you are in the right place for possible scripting-related fixes, there may also be non-script approaches that improve your results.Brett Stone
ParticipantDoodlebug1 and Randi:
Have you resolved the issues?
If yes, would you share your solution?
If no, can you share a link to one of your documents (using dropbox, box, creative cloud, etc?)
There is version history in each InDesign file that would indicate version history, needed plug-ins, etc. and I’d be willing to take a look at it.My experience is that needed plug-ins rarely, if ever, cause a file to not open.
I’m in agreement with others here that the most likely cause is version related.
And knowing it’s a complex world, yep, there could be something else at play.Brett Stone
ParticipantDitto Jeremy.
It’s a real case of ‘yes, it’s possible to do this. But should you?”
Adding to Jeremy, if your content is ever repurposed for use in ePub or other digital distribution, those soft returns and manual hyphens will all be problems.Related topics worth learning:
* Hyphenation and Justification settings for paragraphs
* Discretionary hyphens, and using them before a word to prevent hyphenation
* Column and Page breaks
* No Break commandAre there still times that might just benefit from a soft return? Yes, but they can be rare, and imho should only be applied as close to the end of project as possible, to prevent them from creeping in to places you don’t want them.
Brett Stone
ParticipantTo the topic: a non-scripting solution:
If you have an images subfolder for each part (flute 1 pages 1-12, flute 2 pages 1-12 etc) and each page file with identical filenames you could simply relink your document to the graphics in the part you want to create. The graphics will initially show as modified, but you know that all are produced identically and the swap is safe.Sidebar:
Why would your publisher continue to use a tool released in 2002?
With more recent versions of InDesign, you could have multiple layers (one for each part) and ultimately you export the book x number of times, with just one layer active. To create each part, you could duplicate and rename the previous layer, and drag-n-drop the new part eps onto the existing.
The efficiencies gained right there would seem to make buying a new PC and the software worthwhile in productivity, accuracy, etc. You are correct that scripting could improve this even more.
So what is stopping them? (asked seriously.)March 18, 2019 at 11:25 am in reply to: How do I reinstall the complete set of PDF export standards? #115020Brett Stone
ParticipantAhhhh: Answer discovered.
The PDFx4 standard was made unavailable due to color management being turned off.
I can’t claim any genius status for figuring this one out — the Export Adobe PDF panel contained a warning and message in the summary: “2) The preset specifies PDF/X-3 or PDF/x-4 for “Standard.” The “Standard” setting will be set to “None” because color management is turned off.”Solution: Turn color management on, then all options become available.
This appears to be true in cc2015, cc2018, and cc2019.Also note that color management settings for “North America General Purpose 2” don’t prompt for warnings, while “North America Prepress 2” will.
