  • in reply to: ePub vs IDCC (InDesign Creative Cloud) #65785

For number 8, I think the solution/workaround is to not change the UID that InDesign adds. That’s what we’ve been doing in the studio. Including the ISBN in the metadata is not a requirement for a validator, and as far as I know is not a requirement for e-resellers. (they ask for the ISBN separately in their own upload forms.)

Did you see this post and download the PDF (InDesign CC new epub features) linked to in the post? It may help.

Love the list, it should spark a great discussion!

Have you taken advantage of any of the new features in your workflow, like proper font embedding/obfuscation for iPad? Object styles that include epub export options, and that you can map to html/css tags?

Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts. Look in the product area for the Edit Menu > Quick Apply.

You jump into iTunes that often? :-D

What Dwayne said! That’s the answer you’re looking for (Find: Help icon; Change: Clipboard Contents, Formatted).

Emily you’re the first viewer of my Using InDesign and Word Together title at lynda.com I’ve met “in the wild.” Hope you liked it! ;-D

Select a word, press Command-6 (or Ctrl-6 on Windows) which selects the font name in the Control panel.

Tap the down arrow or up arrow key to move through the list of installed fonts. You should see your selected word get formatted with each font (in alpha order of all your installed fonts, not just most recent) as it becomes active with the arrow key.

    Doesn’t work? Working here.

Alberto are you talking about an HTML TOC in the body of the epub, or the nav TOC (the .ncx file)?

wondering if some of your jquery is unsupported by Apple maybe?

in reply to: Applying keyboard shortcut to paragraph styles? #65719

you have to include a number key from a keypad with your shortcut. Bizarre requirement, esp if you’re using a keyboard without a keypad!

I don’t bother with that anymore, I just use Quick Apply (Command-Enter)

Glad it could help! Sorry I didn’t think of that post before you. ;-D

We can’t allow users to upload files (like most other private boards) so just upload your screenshot to any other picture sharing service, and then add a link here. You might use Flickr, or Dropbox, or Snapfish.com, or PhotoBucket.com — those seem to be the most popular.

in reply to: InCopy and Cross references #65363

Technically, these are called InCopy stories, not assignments (assignments are like mini-layouts you can create in the Assignments panel, that hold collections of InCopy stories).

    Anyway …

If you place the same InCopy story in multiple documents, and this InCopy story had a cross-ref, what do you *want* to happen to the cross-refs in the duplicate stories? (I’m not following you, I guess.)

InCopy story A has a cross-ref to chapter 2 in InDesign file A.
You place the same InCopy story in InDesign file B.

The cross-ref will report that it’s missing the destination in file B, even if file B has a chapter 2.

That’s because cross-refs are hard-wired to the name of the InDesign file they’re pointing to. The story in InDesign file B knows that it’s “lost its mama” and so reports her as missing.

If you update that story in layout B (you’d need to check it out) and point the x-ref to chapter 2 in layout B, and Save, then the story in layout A will report as being out of date, because you edited it. When you place the same InCopy story in multiple files, it’s like placing the same PSD or TIFF in multiple files. Edit one instance, all instances need updating.

So the answer is: You can’t do that, sorry. You can continue using InCopy stories (or use Edit > Place and Link in CS6 and CC), but you can’t use x-refs in them.

    corrected in CC.

in reply to: FULL PAGE IMAGE DISAPPEARS (when placed inline) #64863

I think you need to anchor the “end of the epub” into the main text flow. Otherwise ID exports the entire threaded story first as soon as it hits the first frame, then it exports floating images. So they end up at the end.

ADE 2.01 came out a few days ago, purportedly with numerous CSS updates.

in reply to: Problems with exporting text boxes #64778

Put your “text that appears in distinct boxes” (I’ll call these “sidebars” from now on) into their own text frames. Give them a fill color of what you want and a width of what you want.

Then *anchor* these sidebar text frames into the main text stream. Set a wrap around them if you want, if you want the main body copy to flow to the left or right of the sidebars.

When you export from CS6, the sidebars will be intact. Live text. I would recommend you use CS6’s Object > Text Frame Options > Autosize to set the frame to increase its height automatically. The width will be the same as in your ID file.

Morgane I know I covered this too in the course. ;-D Sorry can’t remember the exact video.

Mark that’s so excellent! Great news.

FWIW I wrote a post on this exact type of grep find/change a couple years ago, you might find it useful.
