Hi Mark! Be sure to post this question on Twitter and on the mobileread.com epub forum too.

Hi Rich, photos are being pulled from Gravatar (https://gravatar.com) … be sure you use the same email address there that you used to log in to the forums.

If you’ll be publishing to a Kindle then you definitely need Kindle Previewer, mentioned above. I cover this in the title, in the videos on ID > Kindle (toward the end of the title).

Other on-screen readers are Readium, as Pooja said, and ePubReader, a free extension to Firefox, and iBook, if you’re on a Mac running Mavericks.

Hi Paul, I think I’ve read that side-loading a MOBI onto your device strips out the KF8-specific info, which would include custom embedded fonts. Users have had better luck emailing the mobi to their devices.

That is unusual that Amazon strips out the fonts when you’ve uploaded the EPUB (the same epub that previewed correctly?). When you viewed it on your Kindle device, did you choose “Publisher” as the font choice?

Michael, thank you for the compliment! I’m thrilled the videos have helped you out.

Great tip about commenting out code … hmmm I don’t remember where in the video that happened, but I’ll use your tip the next time I record it!

Yes, you could just anchor those groups one after the other in an empty paragraph(s) in the story, where you want them to appear.

Or, you can break a long threaded story manually:

    1. Select the frame which you want to be the final one of the first part of the story.
    2. Click once on its Outport lower right. You should have a loaded cursor with a chain icon on it.
    3. Click once anywhere *inside* the same frame. The Outport should now show an overset. The single set of threaded frames is now two sets of threaded frames.
    4. With the Type cursor, click an insertion point after the last character in that same frame. (I would normally click after the last full word, or full paragraph, for a better break.)
    5. Press Command-Shift-End (Control-Shift-End on Windows) to select all the text after your cursor, including the overset text.
    6. Choose Edit > Cut. The overset icon should change to an empty Outport, indicating it’s the last frame of the story.
    7. Click an insertion point in the first frame of the other series of threaded frames, which should be empty of text.
    8. Choose Edit > Paste. The text should flow into the threaded frames.

Now you can insert blank pages in between the 2 halves of the story to place your images, and/or you can drag the images into the Articles panel between the two “halves” of the story.

Pooja, that’s immensely helpful information. Thanks so much for posting all the details!

in reply to: ExtendScript Toolkit / unzip #65984

To open EPUBs on a Mac, and to re-compress them after editing, use this ePub Zip/Unzip 2.0.1 AppleScript:
    https://code.google.com/p/epub-applescripts/downloads/detail?name=ePub%20Zip%20Unzip%202.0.1.app.zip&can=2&q=

Rorohiko’s eCanCrusher will do the same on either Mac or Windows platform:
    https://www.rorohiko.com/wordpress/manuals/fixed-layout-epub-assistant-in-indesign-epubcrawler/

Or you can edit the files of an archive (an .epub is a type of an archive) without having to extract its contents first with BBEdit, oXyGen XML Editor, or BetterZip.

I’ve never heard of using Extend Script Toolkit to work with EPUBs though.

Je n’ai jamais entendu parler de l’utilisation de Extend Script Toolkit pour travailler avec ePubs bien.

in reply to: Nook rejecting embedded fonts ePubs #65911

Do their publishing guidelines say they allow embedded fonts?

in reply to: Hard page breaks for epub #65886

    Let’s see.

    1. Check the paragraph style settings for your “Courses” text frame. (The style you applied to it.) Is there anything special in the Keeps settings?

    2. Ditto for the style settings applied to the first entry in the placed TOC. For example, if it’s set to “start on next page” then it’ll cause a break in some eReaders; that’s afeaturenotabug ;-D

    3. Check the settings for both text frames in Object > Object Export Options > EPUB and HTML. Any checkboxes enabled there?

    4. In your TOC style that you’re telling ID to use for the nav TOC, does it include the name of the paragraph style you applied to the standalone “Courses” text frame?

Mmmmm I love mysteries like this. ;-)

Ideas/questions off the top of my head:

    – Make sure you’re working in Normal mode (not Preview) with Hidden Character showing and Frame Edges showing. If Frame Edges are showing, then you can see any tell-tale badges on the frames that may give you your answer. Like, maybe the text frame is locked? Has it been exported to InCopy (show an InCopy workflow icon upper left)?

    – Is the text on a locked layer?

    – Select the text “Appendix 1” and open the Story Editor … any special icons surrounding it?

Nick, the title of the TOC (like “Contents”) that InDesign generates when it creates a TOC is a weird duck, and this weirdness persists through InDesign CC.

InDesign ignores the fact that you applied a paragraph style to it that’s supposed to split the EPUB. It won’t do it.

I need to write a blog post about this, but the solution is:

    1. In your TOC style, clear out the text in the “Title” field at the top. You don’t want InDesign to add a title to the TOC. (There should be an option for “No Title” but there isn’t.)
    2. Along with the other paragraph styles, include the paragraph style you’ll be applying to your manual TOC title (step 4) in the TOC style.
    3. Save the TOC style and place/update it in your layout. There should be no title at the top.
    4. After you place the TOC, add a text frame above it an enter the title of the TOC (“Contents”) manually, and apply your style to it that will split the EPUB. Make sure the left edge of your Contents text frame is aligned with the left edge of your TOC text frame so they export in the correct order.
    5. When you export to EPUB, specify that TOC style in the dialog box.

    The end result should be:
    1. The title of your html TOC (the one at the front of the book) should appear in the navigation/device TOC, making it easier for readers to jump to it.
    2. The title of the html TOC should appear at the top of the TOC page … iow the “split epub” attribute worked.
