ParticipantI just brought this up in another thread. If you uncheck the “Formatted” (CS5) or “Preserve Appearance from Layout” (CS5.5) button on the Image panel of the EPUB export dialog box, it will only produce one image that is identical to what you have on your hard drive. I believe any object styles associated with the frame are retained, it just doesn't resize or otherwise put effects on the image itself. Or I actually have my graphics inline with the text most of the time. The paragraph style used to format the inline image is retained.
If retaining the formatting is important for other images in your document and you really need to check that box, you can use a Regular Expressions find/change in a text editor like Notepad++ for the PC (free) to find all instances of your image and change the name by deleting the numbers that are appended to the name. Notepad++ has a feature that lets you find text in multiple files in a given folder. I'm no Regular Expressions expert but I think it would be something like this: imagename_fmtd+ and then replace with imagename_fmt. d means any digit and + means one or more times.
Hope this helps

September 20, 2011 at 5:55 pm in reply to: HOWTO use articles panel in to improve workflow for EPUB export? #60571Amy Gilbert
ParticipantThere's a blog post about it here. Or, if you have a lynda.com account you can watch Anne-Marie's excellent tutorial: InDesign CS5.5 to EPUB, Kindle, and iPad. She has a whole video where she takes you through the process step-by-step.
But really, it's quite simple. Just make sure the articles panel is showing and then start dragging and dropping objects on to it. When you export your epub choose Same as Articles Panel under Ordering on the General tab.

It's worth bearing in mind how easy it is to edit an EPUB so that there are multiple links to a single image instead of repeated copies of the same image, because InDesign gives them such similar names: pic_fmt.png, pic_fmt1.png, pic_fmt2.png, pic_fmt3.png, pic_fmt4.png,…
I know. That's what I meant when I said:
I've kept the option checked and done a grep find/change for all the links after the fact in dreamweaver

I believe SVG is supported in the current version of EPUB, but it's simply not supported in some epub viewers!
So much for standards!
Unfortunately, if not all readers support svg, I can't use it. But I'll experiment with the plug-in anyway just for laughs and let you know. Thanks for the tip.
And thanks to both of you for all the great podcasts, blogs, training video, seminars, etc. that have helped me with my new venture into professional epubbing! You guys are amazing!

ParticipantI've done quite a few books where these and the art on the title page are the only graphics in the book (mostly novels) so it's no problem there. For books with a lot of illustrations for which I want to preserve formatting, I've kept the option checked and done a grep find/change for all the links after the fact in dreamweaver and delete all but one of the images. It's easy but it is another step and doesn't help toward the goal I'm sure we all have of getting a finished product out of InDesign (though this may never be completely possible).
Another thing I should mention, when I have simple line drawing vector graphics (which these little break graphics usually are) InDesign does a poor job of anti-aliasing the image. I'm better off using Photoshop to generate these graphics. But I like to use vector graphics for the print edition of the book so that's what I have in InDesign. So I just overwrite the InDesign version with the Photoshop one after my epub is generated. It'll be great when SVG is supported. Is that supposed to happen in EPUB 3.0?
