It’s hard to beat Tuscany when it comes to shooting, and we’ll leave no area unexplored during our adventure. We’ll start with field trips around Florence and the Tuscan countryside, learning the art of landscape photography in the midst of some of the most picturesque land on Earth. From there, we’ll move on to street photography in Siena, San Gimignano, and other medieval hill towns, where we’ll find great subject matter for candids and portraiture.
Ideal for shooters of all levels and interests, this class will offer an intense, immersive learning experience that covers all aspects of digital photography and will dramatically improve your photo and image-editing skills, while offering an up-close view of Northern Italian culture.
Personalized instruction will guide you through the fundamentals of exposure, composition, camera control, specialized shooting techniques, and more. As we venture to Venice and Verona, you’ll also receive extensive training using Adobe Photoshop. From workflow through tone and color correction to advanced editing techniques and tricks, you’ll learn how to take your images from capture to finished archival prints.
Over these three weeks, you’ll hone your photography skills, meet a fascinating community of artists, and immerse yourself in the culture, cuisine and sites of Northern Italy!
The Tuscan Digital Photography workshop is part of a concurrent series of visual arts workshops held at the Santa Reparata International School of Art (take a virtual tour here). Alongside painters, print-makers, bookmakers and illustrators, you’ll study photography inside Santa Reparata’s beautiful studios. In the evening, you’ll have the chance to explore on your own, or join your fellow students in any number of fascinating group activities before you return to your apartment near campus.

DETAILS
Tuition for one class is $1,950 (US) if deposit of $500 is received before Dec. 1; after Dec. 1, tuition is $2,100 (US). Returning students may deduct $100 from tuition for any class, or bring a friend and deduct $50 each!
Transportation to and from Florence, ground transportation, housing and meals are not included.
Housing can be arranged for participants in Florentine apartments. All apartments are centrally located and are within walking distance of the studio and all of the important landmarks. Live blocks away from the Duomo, the Academia, and the Uffizzi! Lease dates vary slightly, and many apartments are available for the entire month of August. Many participants are able to invite family members and friends to visit—the apartment is yours for the duration of the lease. Apartment prices vary depending on amenities such as air-conditioning, etc. Shared apartments can be arranged to lessen costs.

About the Instructor
Ben Long is a San Francisco-based photographer and writer. The author of over a dozen books on digital photography and digital video, he has been a longtime contributor or contributing editor to many magazines including MacWeek, MacUser, Macworld UK, and others. He currently writes for Macworld magazine, and is a senior editor at CreativePro.com. His photography clients have included 20th Century Fox, Blue Note Records, Global Business Network, the San Francisco Jazz Festival, the Pickle Family Circus, and Grammy-nominated jazz musicians Don Byron and Dafnis Prieto. He has taught and lectured on photography around the world.
