Working with tables

I’m working on a Word file with many tables. It has a header row repeated through out the tables. After a little clean up (getting rid of forced line breaks, double spaces, and son on), I made an attempt to import the document to Indesign. The Word doc is in letter size and the book trim size it’s smaller. So the tables were all overset and all over the place. The header row would show in one page and the other rows on the next page. After several attempts I decided to reduce the tables’ font size in Word so each table would fit in one page. This way, when I imported them to Indesign it was manageable. But I wonder what’s the best way to prepare the tables in Word so it doesn’t become to laborious to handle them in Indesign. Any suggestions? Thank you.
