Word XE index tags and floating text boxes

When importing Word files to InDesign, it is possible to set up the Word file with tagged index markers that InDesign then interprets for indexing. They look like {XE “index term”}.
I think I’ve found a problem and a workaround, so it might be worth posting here…
After a frustrating hour or so, it seems that a Word file with XE index tags AND floating text boxes will not import properly into InDesign. Only the tags AFTER the last floating text box in Word imported. Tested with Word 2016 Mac files and ID CC 2015 and 2018.
Removing the floating text boxes from the Word file fixed it, and meant that all the XE tags imported OK.
      Hope that helps anyone.
      Regards,
      Chris

Thank you for sharing that, Chris!
In general, I try to avoid those insane floating boxes in Word files… I’ve had nothing but problems when trying to import docs with those into InDesign.

Yes, those “insane floating boxes” are not my choice of layout tool, but you have to work with what you’re given sometimes.
They’re a pain even if you’re just editing in Word:
        – text flying in all directions at the slightest provocation
        – words randomly showing up or not in searches and word counts according to which version of Word it is
        – and favoured by one of the PDF-to-Word converters that I come across a lot in the translation business
Don’t get me started – oh, I did already!
