Why do PDFs look washed out, blacks look gray?

I had been using Pagemaker for many years and never had this problem, but now with InDesign CS4 (on an iMac running 10.6.2), my great-looking files turn into faded PDFs. Preferences for Appearance of Black are set correctly. My most recent project was a book whose cover (a one-page file) looked good. But the interior file (120 pages) was washed out; blacks looked medium gray. Could it be the size of the file? I'm not experienced enough with InDesign to have changed some obscure setting, at least not intentionally. I know others have had this problem, but I've never been able to find a solution. Would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!
