Everything is set for [Black] text … paragraph styles, text frame setting … but when I apply styles for a chapter number or lead paragraph, everything suddenly goes to white text. Where could this insidious setting be hidden?

Are you highlighting the text in question entirely and applying the style? Or just click anywhere in that line?

If the former–is there a character that has white in it and is accidentally being applied?

I tried both methods … both are turning text white.

I poke around in the characters and try and find something.

Okay … turns out the white text was coming from a random style I clicked on in the Character Styles. Selected all, [None] for Character Styles, fixed it.

Glad you found it… Yeah, those pesky character styles are SO often the problem.

Usually, these days, I just format everything with paragraph styles … except for “bold” and “italic,” and “text variables” for the headers, I use practically no character styles. I actually deleted most of the character styles (at someone’s suggestion), as text formatting becomes a tug-of-war between the two different palettes.

Yes, character styles are really important, but they should be reserved for only things you need them for… like bold, italic, underlines… stuff where you apply it to a single word or phrase inside a paragraph.

And the big rule of the Character Styles panel is: Don’t double-click a character style to edit it! When you do that, you either apply it to whatever is currently selected, or — worse, if nothing is selected — you change your document default, so that style is applied to all text from then on. Bad! Much better to right-click on a character style and choose Edit from the context menu.
