What's the best practice for reusing a magazine doc for new issue?

      I design a 52 pg magazine 4x/year. What is the best practice for reusing the old document and turning it into the new? I want to keep guidelines and repeating elements, but don’t want to keep any bugs or problems that the doc may have.

      Is it as simple as a ‘save as?’ or is there a better method for reusing the same doc over and over, while keeping it clean and trouble free?
