I have indesign cs3, and got a document which is compatible with cs4 and cs5.

With this document I got an .inx file, so that I could open the document in cs3. But what do I do with the .inx file? Where do I install it?

You just open the INX file with File > Open, just like any other InDesign document. It will open in CS3 and CS4. I don't think CS5 can open INX files.

Actually (happily) CS5 can open INX. It just can't export to INX. Makes me think the code to export INX is all still there, but they just don't expose it in the UI any more.

Perhaps Harbs or Jongware will happen along and let us know.

Apart from a brief 30-day stint with the trial, and in general blissfully ignorant of ID's multi-version shenanigans, I've never used CS5 …

Oh wait, I still have my Scripting Resources.

No, “ExportFormat.INDESIGN_INTERCHANGE: Exports to InDesign CS3 interchange (INX) format.” no longer can be found in the Export Formats list for CS5. You could still try with its numerical value (1229871136), but that's a real long shot.
