      Hey all,

I'm have an annoying glitch when I try using Bridge with Indesign. For some reason, I can't double click on an indesign file (.indd) in bridge and have it open in indesign. I'm using indesign cs4 on windows 7. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Weird. What happens if you double-click on it in Windows Explorer? I don't think Bridge is doing any magic; it's probably just asking the OS to open the file. Perhaps the file name mapping got messed up in Windows?

Does holding down the left side of the keyboard (ctrl alt shift) directly after opening Bridge, then rebuild the preferences, does that help?

David – I cannot open files in Windows Exploerer either. My files do open, but I would either have to open them from going to file > open, then selecting my files; or by dragging and dropping from bridge or windows explorer, but in order to do this, I can't have another indesign file open. This happens for any indesign file I try to open.

Eugene – When I tried ctrl alt shift, I get prompted by windows saying that if i wanted to allow bridge to make changes to my computer. I click yes, but then nothing happens.

I, too, had the same glitch but I run XP SP2. And I can't recall exactly what the heck I did!

      I can't remember if I:

      a) Updated either Bridge or InDesign

      b) Rebuilt Preferences in either, or

      c) Changed some Windows setting.

I am very cautious to not to play with the above as I wait to do anything until I get a confirm that all is OK. Like the recent Acrobat 8 up-daters that have caused so much trouble recently. But I did get .indd files to open from Bridge. That I am sure of.

Sounds like your file associations are off. In Bridge, check the preferences: ctrl+k, File Type Associatons> scroll down and make sure the InDesign files are set to open InDesign in the drop down. That should fix opening the files from Bridge.

There's setting in Windows as well, I'm on Window XP still, but there should be a similar, if not the same, menu options for Windows 7. Open a Windows Explorer window (“start” key + E will open it), then Tools menu>Folder Options>File Types tab. Scroll down to the .indd file extension and make sure it's set to open with InDesign. If not, click on Change button and browse to where indesign.exe is stored in the program files.

      Hope that helps!

      I also have this problem.

I'm pretty sure it started after a Windows update? It's not a file association problem, if you double click an indesign file in Bridge, it will open Indesign but not the file. Dragging and dropping from Bridge will work (AdanNada – if you already have a file open you can drag another into the grey area at the top to open). I also can no longer open excel files by double clicking in Bridge. If I try to open an excel file called (for example) “Product List” – it tries to open a file called “Product” and another file called “List” – and can't find either obviously.

All of my files open fine by double clicking in explorer or by opening from within the program.
