I’m trying to create an interactive document for iPad (that will also play on Mac and PC) with embedded video.

I’ve tried creating a single page sample document and exporting in both fixed layout ePub and interactive PDF format.

The ePub crashes iBooks when I launch it (strangely, it’s OK if I only include video OR text, but not with both of them on the page).

The interactive PDF works on desktop but the video won’t play on iPad even in Adobe Reader.

Any suggestions? Video is MP4, H.264, 1280×720, AAC audio, and page format is the iPad Retina preset.

This question has been asked many times and answered by Anne-Marie Conception:

In my lynda.com video title on Creating Fixed Layout EPUBs with InDesign CC, I show how to embed videos as well as link to ones you host yourself.

      https://www.lynda.com/InDesign-tutorials/Creating-Fixed-Layout-EPUBs-InDesign-CC/169624-2.html

To embed videos, you need to convert them to h.264 encoding, then use the Media panel to bring them in and add a poster image. Be sure you choose EPUB 3 when you export. This works for both reflowable and fixed-layout epubs.
The ereader device you use has its own programming to “go full screen.” It’s not something you can include in the code. Typically, though, they’ll go full screen as soon as you start to play it.
      Hope that helps!

I’ve recently encountered this same issue, and did not have much luck finding useful information to troubleshoot the problem, so I’m adding to this thread. Our client required video in an interactive PDF that would work on an iPad. Unfortunately, if you create an interactive PDF in InDesign and then try to view it using Adobe Reader on an iPad, it will not support video playback because the underlying technology for the video is Flash-based, and Flash will not work on an iOS device. We found that by using the PDF Expert by Readdle app as the viewer (US $9.99), and placing an h.264/.m4p video into the document, we were able to get video to work on both desktop and iPad. It does treat navigation links differently, so you need to convert all navigation elements to images (including outlining text), but we were able to get it to look great and most importantly, the video works on an iPad.
