Does anyone know if it's possible to have unique text for the running heads on both the verso and recto pages of a book set in InDesign CS4? I'm using new section starts, section markers, and section text to automate the text for running heads for the recto pages, but I need different text for the verso page (author names). Is there anyway to do this other than overriding all the master pages and manually changing the verso text?

      Thank you!

You don't have separate master pages for left and right?

Hi Jongware, thanks in advance for your help. No, I haven't been successful at setting up separate master pages for verso and recto pages. Whenever I do a single page as a master it defaults to a recto; when I set up two separate masters and then try to automatically flow a document in on master pages, it only pulls one or the other. Is there another way of doing this?

And in doing this, would I simply set up a separate master for each chapter so the author name is able to be changed with each chapter? Or I could use one master and then override master items and copy and paste the vecto running heads for applicable chapters. I was hoping to avoid setting up separate masters for each chapter because then the program gets buggy.

      Thank you!

Well, perhaps you should check your settings then. When creating a new document you have the option “Facing Pages”, and if you have that switched on you automatically get facing master pages — by default, the New Master Dialog shows “Number of pages: 2”.

I just tested — you can change the “Facing Pages” setting after you created your document.

You can see the page icons in the Pages panel change: single pages don't have a folded corner, facing pages show a fold on the outside of their page.

And in doing this, would I simply set up a separate master for each chapter so the author name is able to be changed with each chapter? Or I could use one master and then override master items and copy and paste the vecto running heads for applicable chapters.

Jeez none of that “overriding” stuff please! Look up on how to use Text Variables in the Help, as these are practically created to do exactly this kind of work. The only master pages one would need is one per chapter start (if it has a unique design), and then the same master page again and again, which then automatically would pick up the “current” author and title in the text variables in its headers.
