      Hello chaps,
I have a 50 page interactive PDF made using CS6. It has plenty of buttons in it, as well as other hyperlinks here and there. The buttons all have Rollover and Click states, but they dont use transparency or blending modes, they just change colour.

When viewing this PDF, some users have reported that when they click through, some pages have all the buttons missing. Only when rolling over the place the buttons should be with the mouse do they pop into existence, so you have to manually show them by scrubbing around with the mouse.

Needless to say, the client is not thrilled – anyone have any ideas?

      Salieri,

Were you able to determine the reader and version that was used?

Yeah, that’s the number one problem with interactive PDFs: people not using Adobe Acrobat. If people use anything else, YMMV.

If it was Acrobat, then… um… seems like some kind of glitch, but an odd one.

Do you mean the full version of Acrobat should be used for all interactive PDFs? Gosh, that seems a bit restrictive.

Reader version and platform varied, but I have been able to duplicate the bug here in the studio in Acrobat 10 on a Mac.

By stripping everything out of the document and putting it back in bit by bit I think it is something to do with transparency – if I kill all of the transparent elements I think it is working (so far). To clarify, the buttons used no transparency, I’m talking about other transparent elements on the page.

That is interesting that you’ve been able to reproduce. Is there a chance that some of the colors are spot colors?

Yes, PDF readers are one of the primary issues with PDFs. I talk about that in some detail in my new lynda.com title about Interactive PDFs.

There are no spots in the doc, although when I checked I saw that the original intent was set to Print, so all the new colours are RGB, except for the [Black] swatch and the tint swatches made from it which are all CMYK.

I will have a look at your videos on Lynda, thanks.

I’ve experienced the EXACT same problem Salieri describes.

… and if indeed this is the exact same problem, I think I found the answer; I can only HOPE it translates to other users’ PDF readers. Basically, change the form preferences in Acrobat to not highlight, but like I said, I’m not sure if that is only a preference on my end or if, like properties, that affects the document.

Tice, are the buttons on a master page? I have another post here at the moment called ‘Buttons & Their Masters’ which seems to describe an ID bug, and I’m wondering now if that has something to do with it. I am still seeing the issue periodically even though I have taken out all of the transparency and turned of highlighting.
