I converted an Indesign CC print book to an epub. In the validation it is giving me weird error messages:

ERROR: epub3.epub/OEBPS/content.opf(93,72): value of attribute “id” is invalid; must be an XML name without colons (there are no colons in this entire section. It gives me this message for 4 lines of code for images. Then there are no more of these errors eventhough I have listed a lot more images in the opf. Also Indesign put this code in during the conversion.

      Hi Janis

People do sometimes get these problems with direct EPUB exports from InDesign. It most likely means an ‘illegal character’ is being used in the name of an image somewhere. If you’d care to post the EPUB on Dropbox or similar I can let you know very easily. BTW the (93,72) in the error message mean line 93, character 72 is the exact place that the error occurs so if you ever wanted to delve into the code you do know exactly where to look… but as I say I can offer to have a quick look and tell you.

Yeah I think Ken is on the right track, and I think a screenshot of lines 93 to 97 of the code might also be a good alternative if you don’t necessarily want to post your entire book.

Agreed although I was trying to avoid the unzipping and finding the OPF and finding the lines of code etc…

Janis – More info on this sort of thing including links to some neat free zipping and unzipping tools here https://www.circularflo.com/troubleshooting/#unzipping_and_zipping_epubs

I sent the link to Circulaflo in the Contact section. This is a client’s book so please don’t share.

Thanks so much for the help.

      Hi Janis

ID references are not allowed to start with a number so IDs such as “15745.png” are causing these errors.

      <item id=”15745.png” href=”image/15745.png” media-type=”image/png” />

A simple fix here would be to add a letter in front of the image name to change the ID to e.g. “i15745.png”.

BTW I see you are adding read aloud to your EPUB… FYI my company’s software CircularFLO works with InDesign on the Mac to allow you to add read aloud highlighting without the need for any coding. See more at https://www.circularflo.com/instructions/#read_aloud_tools – it would also never cause an ID error such as this :)

      Thanks
      Ken

        Hi Ken,

I uploaded the latest file to Dropbox. Here is the link.: https://www.dropbox.com/s/5t8zb6vpd77wkcs/ffepub6.zip?dl=0 The The span code was written by inDesign. They put it up during the conversion. Also, I don’t understand why it is telling me that files are missing when they are in the content opf and in the xhtml files and the smil files. I looked and looked for the errors comparing the bad lines with the validated lines and couldn’t see anything different between them. I am going to spend all day tomorrow trying to fix errors. I appreciate any help you can give me. This is driving me nuts. Good luck with the event.

        Thanks,

        Janis

      Hey Janis,

A lot of these errors are misplaced or missing quote marks, mislabeled id’s, scr’s or file names. The missing files are because the href’s in the OPF do not match the explicit file names you have in your folder (be it audio or images). Also removing the properties from your itemref’s will remove the undefined properties errors in the OPF (ePC 3.0.1), the rest (or a good majority) should be what I previously mentioned.

I’m using ePC 3.0.1 and probably don’t have the most extensive knowledge of EPUB3 with read aloud, but Ken could probably set me straight if anything I said was inaccurate or deviates from spec.

Anyway, I hope that helps clear up some of the errors on your end.

      Hi,

I have no idea how to fix this error because I don’t know how to find the ops :”ERROR: epub9.epub: OPS/XHTML file OEBPS/j83643-Flower-Fairy_-epubBody-10.xhtml is missing.” I don’t know how to find the OPS file.

      Thanks,

      Janis
