Hi, I have been watching tutorials by Anne Marie and am up to validating a child’s book, the IDPF site tells me the file should be no larger than 10mb, mine is 34mb and I am lost as what to do, all images are .png, created in Illustrator using the mesh tool. Any ideas please?

      Hi Angela

There is no need to worry. The fixed layout EPUB standard does not have a limitation on file size and 34MB is perfectly manageable and quite typical.
Video and other rich media can easily take file sizes beyond that and retailers can and do handle larger files (Apple for example have much larger limits of up to 2GB!)

You may want to consider compression though and the trade of between quality and size. Do you need to use PNGs for transparency? Otherwise you may want to export your images out to a more compressed JPEG.

I assume you are using InDesign, which defaults to exporting PNGs but you may find you are able to change that in your EPUB Fixed Layout Export Options > Conversion Settings > Format.

      I hope that helps :)

Thanks for the reply, Ken, much appreciated but I was trying to validate this little book on line and they had the 10mb limit, just wanted to go through that process before I start submitting the book. :)

Ah I see. Well, that case I’d recommend using a different EPUB validation tool.

I use Pagina EPUB-Checker which runs on the Mac/PC desktop and is free to use. You get that here https://www.pagina.gmbh/produkte/epub-checker/ (the site starts in german but scroll down half way to see English notes and download links).

      Good luck!

Thanks, I was trying to avoid this one, did not want to have to download! I have bitten the bullet and done it though, so thanks again!

Having problems with this, downloaded okay but unable to open , something to do with java 7 required. No suitable Java version found on my system, I did get a screen shot of the message but cannot see anywhere to upload it here to show you.
