Using the spacebar in InDesign CC2014 Keyboard Shortcuts

In the agency I work in, we’ve been using (CTRL+OPT+CMD+Space) as a keyboard shortcut for a thing space since InDesign CS4 (I know, this is a remnant from our QuarkXPress days… ;)).

Yesterday, I’ve updated to InDesign CC2014 and when I tried to add a thin space, it didn’t work. I’ve punched the shortcut a few times and went in the Keyboard Shortcuts panel to check if something was amiss. The shortcut was there, as it should. But the shortcut just doesn’t work. I’ve trashed my Keyboard Shortcuts set and started a new one, to no avail.

After a few (unsuccesful) forays in the Adobe forums (where there’s more bullying than helpful tips, IMO), I’ve decided to test the default InDesign shortcuts (OPT+SHIFT+CMD+M)… and it works!

So, it seems that InDesign CC2014 is rejecting the spacebar as a shortcut component… Is this a bug? Can I fix or circumvent this as we really want to use our custom shortcut?

I’m eagerly waiting for the output of this community! :)

Did you also upgrade your system or computer? On the Mac, especially, the Keyboard settings inside System Preferences often override InDesign’s shortcuts. Fortunately, you can disable those in System Prefs.

No, no Mac or OS have been upgraded or harmed in any way when I updated to InDesign CC2014 and I’ve made sure no OS X Mavericks shortcuts were conflicting with it.

I thought at first that there was a conflict or a corruption of some sort within the shortcut .indk file, that’s why I tried and created a new shortcut setup from scratch, but that did not work either. I’ve got the .txt file InDesign creates when one wants to see the shortcut set, but I don’t know what to look for if there’s a corruption of something making InDesign reject the spacebar component of the shortcut.

No one besides me is using InDesign CC2014 today, but all my colleagues will be on it by monday and I want this fixed before their calls flood my office! ;)

UPDATE: I fired up InDesign CS6 to check if the shortcut was working correctly and it does… So, InDesign CC2014 seems to be rejecting the CTRL+OPT+CMD+Space for no reason whatsoever.

Yes, there seems to be something buggy or weird here. When I try other shortcuts for that character (the default shortcut is ctrl-option-cmd-M) some work and some don’t! I tried Ctrl-Shift-spacebar and that did work.

THAT is queer! It seems that as soon as we add the OPTION key, the shortcut is broken!

Has Adobe secretely decided that the OPTION key is used for something else that we don’t know of? :P

Nevertheless, I’ve corrected the shortcut to CTRL+CMD+SPACE and it works.

      Thanks!
