      Hello community

I designed a yearbook of school in fixed ePub layout, size 1920 x 1080 px of 318 pages with InDesign CC 2018 in a MacBook Pro (16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 / SSD 500 GB) running in macOS High Sierra 10.13.3.

In iBook it looks perfect and the Object States, Scroll texts made with “Universal Scrolling Frames script”, Buttons, etc. work without problem.

Publish OnLine also works perfectly on both Mac and Windows. But we have to record 2000 Pendrives with the Yearbook as a gift.

The problem is that my client needs to see it in Windows 7 and the ePubs Readers for Windows that we tested have not worked. The pages look bigger than the screen in many readers does not allow “Fit to Window” and the scrolls doesn`t work well.

      What do you advise me?
Is there any ePub Reader recommended?

      Thank you very much
      Eduardo Lagreze

      Hi Eduardo

If you are not using DRM to restrict access to the EPUB, then the Microsoft Edge browser for Windows 10 is also a good EPUB reader that supports fixed layout these days.

Otherwise Windows users might try the Adobe Digital Editions https://www.adobe.com/solutions/ebook/digital-editions.html until Readium 2 Desktop comes of age https://www.edrlab.org/readium/readium-2/

Unfortunately you are not alone waiting for a fully featured EPUB reader for Windows. Bob Levine laments the problem in his blog here https://www.boblevine.us/the-fixed-layout-epub-missing-piece-reliable-readers-for-windows-and-android/

      Good Luck!

        I appreciate the great help.
I have tried everything to make it work in Windows, all I have left is to make an interactive PDF. Anyway, most likely I have new questions like, how to make scrollable text in PDF.

        regards
        Eduardo

I can give you some reason to be optimistic. In the most recent Windows Insider builds Edge has been dramatically improved. In fact, it’s fabulous in my tests. I used a 750 MB fixed layout epub containing audio, video, animations, MSOs and everything rendered flawlessly.

You can join the Windows Insider program directly from Windows 10 in the Windows Update window. Choose fast ring. You won’t want to do this with a production machine but I don’t think there’s any horrible danger right now since things are getting locked down for a Sept/Oct release.

For Windows 7 you have my sympathies. All I can suggest is keeping an eye on Readium 2.0 and hope it works as well as the original Chrome extension.

Thank you very much Bob, it’s excellent news. Unfortunately in school I imagine that people use a variety of devices and operating systems, in which not all will work well. But I trust that these problems get better as soon as possible.

@Bob Levine – can you give me more details on this please ? I am in the same position here – Adobe Digital Editions on the PC doesn’t show the our Epub properly. On the mac ibooks works great BUT Adobe Digital Editions zooms in when using buttons on the EpUb – it didn’t do this in the previous ADE version. Some search criteria also not working on the PC.

Would love to see this working and soon. Seems Adobe Digital Editions update really messed things up.
Please send me links / updates if you can.

      Many thanks

      Ian

@Bob Levine – Hello Ian. Finally and given the amount of errors in Windows I decided to publish the yearbook in an online way. Anyway, it does not work perfect because when you see it in a browser on any Mac or PC, when you use the Track Pad or the mouse wheel, it works as a zoom when reading scrolling texts. Do you know if you can change that function?
In contrast on the tablets and mobile (touch) everything works perfect.

        Thank you
        Eduardo

Have you tried Readium epub reader through Chrome?
