Updating internal references

I have a 600 page manuscript made up of about 150 numbered “documents.” Each document is numbered consecutively – “Doc. 1, Doc. 2” etc. In text within the manuscript I make internal reference to various of the documents, referencing to them as “Doc. 1” “Doc. 6” etc. Now I want to add a new document between, say, Doc. 50 and Doc. 51, which would necessitate renumbering the remaining documents, and the internal references.

I can do this one by one, using find and replace. But I’d like a way to set this up so that in the future the internal references are updated automatically whenever a document in the sequence is added or removed.

      I’m using InDesign 5.5.
