Unwanted White border when I go to print

I am trying to create a family tree to print and frame. Not sure what I am doing wrong. When I click on shift W, everything looks good. When I hit print, there is a white border around the document. I originally thought it might be because I was sizing down from a 36×24 to print a 20×16, but that is not the case. I recreated it with the correct size to start and I still have the white border. Although originally the top and bottom border were 1 1/2 each and there was hardly a side border. Now there is a huge left and right border and the top bottom border is there but much smaller.Thought maybe it was that there was a bleed of .125, so I made those all zero and I deselected it when exporting. What else can I try?

Most printers cannot print all the way to the edge of the paper. Maybe that is the problem?

Thank you for the response. I am not sure if that could be the problem. My first attempt to print was at Office Max. I am guessing their printers can print to the edge. The person that was helping me said she thought it was strange because it looked ok until she pulled it up in the print preview. She didn’t have any personal experience with indesign. This time, I am looking in my print window before taking it to the printers. I exported it as a pdf, if that matters.

Yes, it’s a great idea to export to PDF and then bring the PDF file to them to print. Once it is in PDF, it doesn’t matter if it came from InDesign (that is, the person who prints the PDF doesn’t need to know anything about InDesign… they just need to know about PDF and Acrobat.)

When you look at the PDF in Acrobat, does it go to the edge of the page?

I would not expect printers at officemax to be able to print to edge of a sheet of paper. They should know whether that is possible, but most printers cannot do that.

Is acrobat what I am viewing it in, when I am in indesign? When I am there and hit shift W, it goes to the edge. If I open the pdf, I am not sure. It fills up the screen top to bottom but there is a large area of grey in the background on the left and right of the document there. When I open It I hit print from the open pdf, that is where I see the white border.

No, Acrobat is a different program. It’s also called Adobe Reader. It’s what lets you view PDF files.

When you choose File > Print, there may be some settings, including “Scale” or “Fit”… You may need to adjust that to get rid of the white area. See this article:

You might have a bleed amount set when you have exported the pdf?
