I have a line of copy that breaks with a hyphen even though there is enough space to fit without hyphenating.
I tried turning hyphenation off but then it brings the word down to the next line.
I can’t figure out what the problem is… can someone help?

Try using a soft return (shift+return) at the end of the word you want to force onto the next line. That might help?

What Hyphenation setting are you using? Check and change then to see if you ave get it to work as you want.
Also check you justification and composer settings as these may be affecting how your text is flowing.

Maybe it could be a language problem, hyphenation depends also on the language applied to the text.

Adobe Paragraph Composer is the default, which can look odd in some layouts. You can control it in Paragraph/Paragraph Styles under Justification. You can tweak more settings here too.

If you want two (or more) words to stay together, select them and Window->Type & Tables->Character->No Break. If you use No Break often, assign a Keyboard Shortcut to it. Using a soft return can cause reflow problems down the road.
