Unidentified grey boxes in Story Editor

Sometimes, when using the Story Editor, text appears with overlapping grey boxes (look like missing glyph symbol…) at the beginning of each line of text. Particularly after placing text from a Word doc.

I have created a blank InDesign file, added some text by typing it in myself, added more by copying from another source, applied styles, and no grey boxes show in the Story Editor. However, on occasion, when placing (File > Place…) text from a Word file, the grey boxes show up. They are very annoying, the text is difficult to read, etc.

They always appear at the beginning of a line, and they overlap the first character. Changing the size of the window/reflowing the text, does not move the box away from the beginning of the line.

What is it? And how do I get rid of it?

This has been happening to me too and driving me nuts. I accidently figured it out today.

I placed a Word file into ID and it had those pesky squares in the story editor. The file had a table with the text – once I removed the table, the squares disappeared! Oddly, when I copied the text into a new ID file, the squares were not there. But when I copied back into the original file, they appeared again.

I also exported to an IDML file to see if my ID file was corrupt but that didn’t solve the problem.
