      Hi all,

First I want to say thank you for this wonderful site – I’ve learned so much about inDesign here that has really helped me in my job role.

I’m working on a textbook that has multiple chapters (separate documents), and within each chapter are several sections, which themselves contain subsections and topics. Using numbered list and paragraph styles and, up until now, everything has been going swimmingly… Structure is as follows:

      Chapter 1: Compressors
      1.1: Major Components
      1.1.1: Item A
      1.1.2: Item B
      1.2: Terms & Concepts
      1.2.1: Topic
      – Item
      – Item
      1.2.2: Topic

      Chapter 2: Engines
      2.1: Major Systems & Components
      2.1.1: Item A
      2.1.2: Item B

      And you get the idea…

So the problem I’m having is in Chapter 1, when I try to get going on section 1.3 (Settings & Clearances), my section numbering is automatically reset to 1.1, rather than 1.3. I have tried resetting numbering, restarting numbering, have checked my paragraph style, text frame linking…. everything I can think of that would cause this to happen and I cannot figure it out. I’m stressing about this because my bosses are giving me side-eye like “when’s that book going to be done, eh?”

Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated!

Can you provide a screenshot of your three section paragraph style numbering tabs? This may help in determining the cause of the restart. You will need to upload to an image hosting site and provide a link.

Just wondering: Is Section 1.3 in the same thread as Section 1.2 and Section 1.1?, or is it in a separate thread? This can sometimes be the problem.
